Once it reaches the 4gb limit, you can start recording again straight away. The camera will give you a temp warning indicator and stop recording if the sensor gets too hot. Thus you cannot damage it.

What the guy at JB Hifi told you is completely wrong. Maybe he wanted to sell you a video camera as well
What temperature would that be? Just curious.

At 720p the camera does 50 or 60fps.

Some points to remember. If you want fluid motion, record at 720p either 50 or 60fps. It's really nice. 60fps is best, not only cause it has a higher frame rate, but also because it matches lcd display rate.

If you want detail, record at 1080p. I'm really impressed with the quality of the recorded video.

Correct me if im wrong but with DSLR's and video recording...there is no focussing?

So recording statues is fine but anything that moves towards or away from you will be out of focus? Kind of makes it pointless having video.

There's this crazy thing on the front of your lens. It's called a focus ring. Google "DSLR follow focus".

True, you can't treat it like a camcorder. This doesn't make it useless.

I recently purchased a Panasonic SD700 1080P camcorder...and am looking at a DSLR again (obviously for still pics) and most of the cameras im looking at have video as well. Obviously if I dont want to use it I dont have to but seems kinda pointless having it (spending the money on it) if im not going to use it.

And having to "rig" something up to get a DSLR to focus for video...the word GHETTO springs to mind...naap!!

Is there a specific reason WHY a DSLR will not auto focus when taking video?

no one has made it yet...

wait til the d90 raplcement comes out... that will aparently have autofocus during video... and tbh... video on a slr is really a gimmick for now... even though once u get used to manual focusing it isnt really that bothersome.

actually d3100 (d3000 replacement) has continuous AF in video.. not sure about d90 replacement although i would suspect that it will also have it.

Well when they bring out a DSLR that can auto focus while taking video then I can ditch the camcorder. (mind you it is a good bit of kit).

Yes.

The focus system in DSLR's only works when the mirror is down. When the mirror is down the sensor can't see anything.

Note some have 'live view' focussing, why that isn't implemented for video I don't know, maybe it's too processor intensive, it's certainly slow.

I think it's because it uses a different sort of focussing technique. Standard DSLR focusing techniques require the use of the phasing and that requires the mirror.

Take the mirror out and have the image go straight onto the sensor and you'll be using a different focussing technology - this would be the same type as standard compacts use... and compacts are already slower on focussing than SLRs.

550D has live view focusing using contrast detection. It needs to be enabled via the menu. Reason being that it's slow and very noisy (in built mic pics it all up). Also it opens the aperture right up during focus so the exposure brightens until it locks.

Basically it's not that functional. It's also not always able to achieve lock and (often) hunts like crazy on flat (low contrast) surfaces.

It's better on the 550D than previous models but not great.

Anyone know if a Class 4 memory card will be suitable for this camera? In terms of keeping up with fps and video shooting raw.

I have a class4 sandisk, shooting video gets few minutes, shooting pics in raw gets about 5 continuous shots before it gets busy for about 10 seconds.

Forget it, you need a class 6

Video will pause when you run out of buffer, this will depend on the quality at which you are recording.

Class 4 = Fail
