Default redhat 7.3 installl

how much hdd space do you need for a standard rehat 7.3 install???? ive allocated 3.5gb for the drive and it brings up an error 3/4 way through the install saying possibly out of hdd space!?!? in the installer it says it only needs like 1.7gb

I would have thought that 3.5GB would be enough.

How did you set up the partitions? You will need a lot of room in /usr.

Hmm. Did you select everything when asked what packages to install? Try selecting just "default workstation" (or whatever option its called in RH).

is it possible your drive is corrupt??

i've not seen the install for 7.3 but previous versions there is an option to check partitions for errors...tried that?

tried a cut down install only selecting conponents you actually need?

it's possible that the first install you did has corrupted other installs. the way I got around this was to change the size of the partitions then this wipes the table and starts over. if you use the partitions you originally set up then i have found red hat doesn't wipe them and tries to overwrite the data contained in them. I am most likely wrong on this point but thats my experience with it

*ching ching another 2 cents*

I put RH 7.3 on a laptop recently with only a 4gb drive, as you pick each package to install your given a summary of the total space it will take up, theres 3 cds's in all so installing everything will take up quite a bit of space

It's nothing like 3.5Gb tho. So you only have two partitions? '/' and swap? What file system did you use?

I got a similar error when installing a while ago that was attributed to a bad CD. Which CD does it give the error on? (eg. 1, 2 or 3)?

I recently installed RH7.3 on a laptop with a 700Mb HDD...

You just need to be very selective with the components you install ;-)

Cheers,
Martin.

you don't need a huge swap partition. if you want to conserve space, cut it back to 300mb. 1.5-2gb would be more than enough for a standard install - including games, kde, gnome etc.

Where the F!@$ is the /boot partition??

I have my RH 7.3 running like this.

/boot 24mb
/ is 1.8gb
/swap is 384mb

It's fine, but i can't install much other than what i need. I don't game in linux anyways, so it's cool. I also don't do much dev work, so i don't have much of that installed either.

I can't wait till i get my new 2 x 40gb 7.2k rpm ide's in another 2 wks. Then i will have the space i need!!!! For both my OS's!

Cheers
