Okay, I've seen the piece over at Gizmodo.

It looks heaps better then in the first photos. I like it better then the current iPhone, but would still have preferred more iPad DNA in the back.

I figure it was leaked. Most people buy these on contracts, and people on 3Gs contracts are expiring in the states. They are just trying to say "Hey, hold on... we have a new handset out really soon and it's going to shit all over everything else! don't lock yourself into another contract yet".

Good move.

Very nice scoop by Gizmodo. Props to them!

I agree that this is the real deal, at least a prototype. I think the final product will look exactly like this with these exact changes (maybe some tweaks and bug fixes).

Jobs will be absolutely rank about this today. Someone will have to face his wrath. He likes to be the first one to show things off so he will be quite disappointed I'd assume.

Love all the changes. Great work again Apple!

^ See above. Jobs will be in on it all.

Yes, cos Apple are known for caring about keeping current owners in the loop on their product update cycles amirite?

This is the most awesome story of win ever. Gray Powell will forever be known as "the guy who lost the prototype iPhone in a bar"

The ethical discussion is a bit too heavy for me though. Didn't Engadget pass on paying $10K for the privilege of owning the prototype?

As for the actual device, I love the industrial design. Perhaps they could have put in a larger screen (though there are probably technical limitations there), but I think the glass (ceramic?) back works.

It's not about keeping them in the loop.

It's about keeping them as customers. Cash.

not keen on the design, honestly dont think its real at this point. it doesnt gel with any of the current apple designs, its not even an evolution of thier stuff (think g4 mbp - unipad, still design influence) or all ipods/iphones have had similar stylings thus far.

the outset edges, rounded buttons, non-flush design just isnt apple, as we have seen for the last 10 years anyway.

But thats like saying that the new Unibody Macbooks and Macbook Pros

are not as Apple like as the Powerbook/Macbook Pros and iBooks.

and they themselves leave a lot to be desired over the older again Powerbooks and iBooks.

Personally i like the changes and cant wait for the new model to arrive.

Even if it isn't the final case, which it might not be, we have solid information of what will be inside and the new features.

Good enough for me.

But i think they will redesign the shell slightly, Apple hate seams, why would they have them on the iphone?

notice the evolution of design there, from outwards buttons to flush, the design is clearly progressive. this iphone is complete departure from the trend.

I guess what really annoys me is that Gizmodo published the name and information of the guy who supposedly owned the phone.

They didn't have to do that to make a story, they could have just left him out. But soon after they published the story and started to get backlash from the public accusing them of stealing they whip up a post saying 'Look guys, its not us but this guy that screwed up!' and in the process probably screwed up this guys carrier... err... career!

It wasn't necessary at all other then to cover Gizmodo's own butt.

I'm sure it wouldn't take Apple all that long to determine where the link came from and he'd be fired anyhow. But to make it public like that, just adds salt to the wounds.

That letter looks fake. "Please let me know where to pick up the unit". Come on
