that rocks.
just to re-cap, you can already: -upgrade hard drive -run other apps (MAME, quake2, etc) -save many games to hdd -play mp3, divx, dvd (region-free, no macrovision) and now run linux !!!...currently no X but thats surely soon to come. I think i'll be buying one tommorow....even without running games its pretty cool |

forget a file server lets make a folding cluster
![]() imagine it, $400 (is that right?) per node...sure beats $1000 or so that you would pay for a normalish node....or am i just way off with modern prices? either way it would be a good gimmik to #1 again thanks to 100 x-box's running linux.

Those boxes have about a 700MHz Celeron, right? How would it go playing DivX (thinking set top bo for in the living room).
I know some movies were a bit choppy on my old Athlon 900.

90% of movies were fine on the Athlon 900. But every now and then I would get one that seemed to stutter a bit.
Set up: W2K, WMP 6.4, DivX 5.02. I might install Linux on my old PIII 500 and see how that goes. I would definitely buy an XBOX if I could use it as a set top box.

No, quite the opposite in fact. They were very crisp.

personally i would wait on buying an X-box just for linux until they actually have something that works totally. i.e. a system that has X for a start. it's all good and well to be able to serve web pages and telnet to the thing but actually being able to use it as a divx box requires a lot of extra development. like being able to write to the hard drive for instance. i'd wait until all that stuff is working before buying one.

I agree. At the moment it's not very useful, however it looks promising for the future

well i pre-ordered mine today. $400 with dvd remote +Halo + any dvd @ EB starting next weekend.
yes at the moment they dont have much...but the linux-xbox project has been making very rapid progress. I give it 2 months before they have X working ![]() plus I dont wanna wait until MS starts shipping the boxen with new harder to hack (tm) features...yes ppl will hack them, but these first round of xboxen will surely be the easiest to hack up. and i believe they already have it playing divx...not under linux, but part of the xbox media player project. anyway i needed a new toy.. |
