i got a z32, not z23, and thats slightly better (partial compatilbility), so its worth playing with. I'll read up about it and give it a go.
thanks for the link bern
edit: followed the links and got to site to download the biary, ill try that.
my original qusetion related to the lexmark rpm i downloaded of a different site, installed, but couldnt get the system to recognise it

edit: kicks ass, reitried the rpm, maybe i didnt have lpd daemon enabled, or cos cups was installed, but the rpm works now, got the whole windows style program, where you can set alignment, quality, monitor ink cart levels. Good quality printouts
hehehe not bad, all i did was rpm -ivh (z32_lemarketc) and reboot the pooter to start the daemon. Now i can use the linux box as a server (as it was intended to be)

I havent used linux for 6 months and I forgotten everything
Damn I wish I could remember how I got this working. Finally got a decent enough speed PC to use a a samba file server box and I need to do it again for but cant get it working
Anyone know how to install a printer with your own drivers.ie. without using the crappy supplied ones you get when you go to printer config in gnome or kde?

edit:Cant get this printer to work, maybe I was using a diff dist back then, or I installed totally different packages this time. Why cant I get everything working at the same time!

I read that the lexmark drivers dont work with lprng (which redhat 7.3 and my 7.1 have) only with lpr (which mdk 8.0 had - thats the dist I must have been using back then.)
What I did was reinstall rh7.3 without lprng or other printer drivers. After installation I installed the older lpr off mdk 8.0 cd and re-ran the manufacturers driver. Maybe I didnt have to do that, maybe lpr is installed by default if you uncheck lprng? I dont know. but anyway it works now, and works good with perfectly straight lines.
Hopefully everything else works now as I had to cut a lot of apps out during installation due to dependicies.
But yeah if anyone has a lexmark, you can get them going this way.

(details also recorded for prosperity and also if I forget in a few months time )

Now I gotta get samba setup again

there is the linuxprinting.org website (not 100% on the url though) and there is the gimp-print-cups (not 100% on the order though) package which contains a fload of print drivers.

yeah the gimp print drivers work very well through cup for me for my epson 760. But when printing out graphics (photos) even if you select photo paper and te highest quality it is sill rather crap compared to how it prints through the official epson drivers under windows.

VERY poor contrast!

Anyone found better drivers?
