Default Help Linux Noobie

Guys,

I'm trying to connect Windows XP to my linux box via a RJ45 Crossover cable, and 2 ethernet cards,

How to I configure Samba or somthing so they both can see each other.

I have no hub etc, and am starting out in the world of linux.

I've looked at samba's website and its fairly complicated.

Thanks

Before you wanna start setting up samba you should have your network set up properly.

Is it ?

Can you ping each other?

To setup Samba, edit /etc/samba/smb.conf (the location may vary, depending on the linux distribution you're using), and work your way thru the settings.

The default smb.conf that RedHat installs has all the configuration options documented, so it's very straight forward to figure out what you need to configure.

Cheers,
Martin.

goto www.linuxdoc.org

Read about networking.

A few notes about what you need to read.

You need to bring up your interface.
First check that support is compiled in, or compiled as drivers.

ifconfig ethx 192.168.n.n up

should do the trick, replace x with the interface no, n with the ip your giving the card.

You may want to edit your hosts file.

In XP. You card may be assigned an ip address in two ways (for your purposes). You give it one, or dhcp does. It's probably easier if you give it one, however sometimes windows stuff (like ICS) won't work properly if you do. Therfore you need to set up dhcp server in linux, do a few searches, you'll find what you need.

after that, you can check if they are connecrting.

on both boxes

ping n.n.n.n

if it works on both, voila!

Now go read about samba

How about a little more information; like the distribution you use, and the network card types etc?

Every distribution is different, and each has its own little tools to help you along the way (eg. RedHat comes with 'netconfig', which would help you with the networking). We would be able to provide you with more precise information if you just included a little more with your initial posts.

(p.s. This isn't a flame, just trying to give some helpful advice).
