Compatibility Issues with P35 boards

Hi,
One of my friends is interested in getting a Radeon 5770. As i am aware, it runs on pcie 2.1, whilst he only has a Gigabyte S3 P35 board, which runs on pcie 1. Is pcie 2.1 backwards compatible?

I myself have an ep35 which is the same thing and I'm running a 5850 without any problems, so I think we can saftely say it will be fine, although there could be an increase in performance using a pci-e 2.0 board, but I have no idea.

oh ic.. yea that's what i thought too.. as long as it fits into the slot that's fine.. He'll be upgrading to a newer motherboard later on, so should be fine for the moment being.
