Even that Winamp looks cluttered compared to my foobar setup.

There's heaps and heaps and heaps and heaps of plug ins as well for all kinds of shit..
The entire music library I have ~600gb loaded up in a single playlist instantly.. 33 weeks 6 days and 9 hours worth. Not sure how much yours would be.

Nothing wrong with itunes in OSX.

Thats awesome! How about pushing music to airport expresses? Can that be done ? If so goooodddbbyyyee itunes :P

Does Foobar tag songs correctly? I've re-tagged my collection, but when I drag and drop them onto my Sony Walkman, the majority aren't tagged and I need to browse my collection via folder.

Lots of votes for foobar here... I havent used it.

I guess we know it can push music to an ipod, but more importantly:

Do we know if it can also read back settings from an iPod? Precisely, when using iTunes I can read back 1-2-3-4-5 star ratings given to the songs on the iPod and they are instantly applied to the songs. This is an important rating interface I dont want to lose.

does it have playlists? or even better smart playlists that add songs automatically when i add new songs according to a certain field?

Thats the reason i stopped using winamp and foobar, ~60Gig and got sick of track 1- album - artist, so i moved to itunes and tuneup pro, just drag and drop your collection of music into it and it finds all the data for it ^_^

as for 60,000 in 1 playlist, i would say winamp, I have had 120,000 and it handled it fine.

don't you have to pay for tuneup pro? i tried the trial for it and some of the songs were tagged incorrectly from past experience. I use MusicBrainz Picard to tag my music now, but it still tag about 5% of the files incorrectly because its asian music database isn't massive.

i find winamp is a bit slow, when searching for music (like in the searchbar, also adding new music isnt all that quick, but not too bad) with a large library. (compared to when i only had like 1k songs.)

BUT i am only basing this only 8.5k songs 44 gig library.

I just love the functionality of winamp though. i have tried foobar, but went back to winamp.

i cant believe people are talking about itunes

Try Billy.

Or, as umpteen other people suggested, Foobar.

What's the choice for retagging? I have about 25k tracks in various stages of tagging - bit of a mess really. Going across many different playback devices makes it challenging!

I tend to use MusicBrainz Picard to tag each new album as I add it to my library. Works a treat! Only thing it doesn't grab is albumart, but I use mp3tag to add it later.

If you do get foobar2000, beware of one thing: It's standards compliant. It writes the latest id3v2.4 tags by default, but when later versions of Windows Media Player see id3v2.4 tags it trashes them and just leaves the truncated id3v1 tags.

So once you install foobar2000, go to options -> advanced -> tagging -> id3v2 writer compatibility mode and you'll be sweet.

It's really Windows Media Player's fault for being so shitty with tagging/album art, wish I'd known about this behavior before it destroyed my playcounts, any fields longer than 30 characters, album art stored as folder.jpg, replaygain info and any non-standard fields..

*slaps a dev*
