Cool The Sigmalux 50/1.4 FAN CLUB!!!!

A few people were after some test shots with the Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX. yesterday I got a second chance to shoot with it.

I am currently in tassie, and only have an eeepc. So the rest from my holiday will have to be edited later, and put up in the gallery then. But I would just like to share a 100% crop of one of the shots I took yesterday, alongside the overall picture.
I am normally not a pixel peeper, but for a 21MP image to be so sharp at 100%, just shows how special this lens is.

[Note - This image was shot at f3.5, but I assure you at f2.8 it was just as sharp, and at 1.8, almost as good as well. I was not intending to use any of these images as a test, and so never thought to shoot wide open (I was trying to take the photo I wanted haha) ]

What's the usability ratio of shots? (in terms of accurate focus)

Seems to be about the same as my 24-105L, which is about 95% (ish).

But I have only had it on my camera shooting with it for about 15 minutes, and took about 30 frames. And that was in good light. So It needs a bit more use before I can give an accurate assesment.

All thumbs up for the Sigmalux. I've had the chance to own both the Canon and Nikon mount versions and both have produced stellar results.

I'm not one to look for focus inconsistencies and probably do not even know how to spot front/back focusing. What I do know is that I have a bunch of wonderful shots because of the Sigmalux.

It is worth every penny (and it's quite a few) over the Nikon and Canon f/1.4 equivalents. Plus, sharing the same 77mm filter thread size makes it awesome for sharing filters for your 24-70 and/or 70-200 2.8's.

Most of the shots from my last set were shot with the Sigmalux.

Keeper rate of 100% ... excluding those with horrible composition that is. Never been disappointed with this lens.

Which camera were you using to take that one? How much is the Sigma 50mm 1.4 compared to the Canon version?

I assume you were directing that question at me.

I was using the D700 at the time.

Both the Nikon and Canon mount are same in price brand new, ranging from $499 delivered grey or $599 aus-stock. They're rare to find secondhand which is a bummer as I want mine back!

I gotta agree with all the above comments, the Siggy 50 EX is the 50mm to get.
After calibration with CR Kennedy, its spot on with focus accuracy, previously mine was front focusing.

Ah yes. VRM prompted me to be reminded that CR Kennedy can/will/may pricematch the Sigmalux (or any Sigma lens) according to grey importer prices.

I forgot to mention in my original post, that I shot these with the 5d2 @ 21MP

It really is the 50mm to get. The main reason I wanted it was for the 77mm thread size. As most of my other lenses have 77mm thread. I think it looks a lot better on the front of the 5D2 compared to the canon equiv

I was referring to the price of Sigma's 50mm 1.4 compared to the price of Canon's own 50mm 1.4.

This particular review didn't give a flattering opinion of the Sigma lens though:

Might have been a dodgy copy, but who knows?

It was actually that review that made me get the Sigma over the Canon

For what reason exactly? That review wasn't very stellar.

EDIT: 666th post. Ominous.

TDP is infamous for giving non-stellar reviews for non-Canons.

There's probably a $100 to $150 price differential between the Canon 1.4 and the Sigmlaux.

How much of that is bias though?

One of the worrying things I saw is how often there are reports of having to take Sigma lenses back for recalibration, because they don't quite work perfectly straight out of the box.

My brother has a Sigma 30mm that is still out for repairs because it didn't focus properly brand new.

really is a special lens.
more performance than 'first party' makers and not more expensive
