I think the main problem with installing XP on any server hardware would be getting the correct drivers for the hardware. I doubt that any of the major vendors of server hardware would make desktop drivers for their server hardware.

May still be prudent to point them towards a decent security system from another supplier/contractor.
If going the server route then you need to get very fluent in both the software and hardware as well as then be able to setup remote veiwing and streaming. For this alone, Linux will more than likely be a pain in arse. It doesn't come down to what you're comfortable or our opinions, it comes down to the person/persons who have to live with and use it. XP is just as secure as anything else and is stable, those who say otherwise I suspect are not real crash-hot in the department. The hardware is also in better position to be happy rather than just desktop grade stuff. The only way you will have full luck with a Linux distro is with a custom made distro suited to the role but I feel this will add $$$$ to it. |

1) Security infrastructure (cctv, etc) should be install by qualified specialists. Those that know the legal ramification of getting it wrong (eg: A club in my area recently got fined for not having adequate surveillance.)
2) XP Pro, XP Home, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2003 Server, etc all share a very similar kernel; stability wise I would have no issue running a computer to monitor (and for that matter, capture) a cctv feed on XP Pro. The vast majority of CCTV deployments I've come across were operating under XP Pro and XP Home. I don't think I've ever seen one running under a server line OS. It is an unnecessary cost (unless your capturing to an smb share with more than 5/10 clients (xp home/pro respectively - as this is the physical smb client connection limit.) As andrewbishop stated - your biggest issue will be locating drivers to suit XP.
