Default Xbox 360 RROD Fix?

Hi all,

I recently picked up my friends old Xbox 360 (he has brought another now) which has the red ring of death error. And its not longer under warranty. Anyway he doesn't want it back so I might try fixing it.

From what I've read online it due to overheating issues and the heat sinks need to be remounted. Is this correct? or is it actually something else.

Anyway I've looked at a few videos on youtube on how to fix it (remounting the heatsink and replacing the xclamps) has anyone else tried this? And can recommend how to do it, eg what size screws to use and such?

Thanks,
Brad

Hi Brad, as per your other post:

If you're feeling handy, you can buy kits on ebay (10 bucks or so I think) that include all the tools you need to fix it. Once they RROD though, they tend to stay a bit flaky. If you're serious, you can take it to someone to get it 'reflowed' which is a bit more stable, but more expensive as well.

lets be honest here, if its RROD after the 3 years replacement warranty you're better off getting a new one

any fix that isn't a genuine one is only going to be temporary and you'll end up getting a new xbox later on

yeah, they'll fix it but at what price ?
you're better off getting a new one than risk it failing again

I've fixed a few few in my time...
All I've had to do is pull it apart (This was kinda hard first time round, 2nd time onwards its a piece of cake) and clean off the old thermal paste and replace it with some new stuff and remount. Turn it on with no fan, let it over heat for a minute or two (to fix any cracked solder or something) and then its generally good to go. My first one wouldn't run if the dvd drive was where it went but after a week it worked as good as new for some reason.

By flakey he means it'll probs break again soon, mine broke like 2 months later, same thing fixed it though, 3 months later it broke again, im yet to have a look at it though, definetly worth a try.

I did the replace xclamps fix. Ie. Drill holes in heatsink, Screw heatsinks onto motherboard. It did work.... For about 3 months. Now no rrod but it artifacts and locks up after boot up. So i borked something else. I am thinking just be a bit more careful when tightening the screws. Too tight and the motherboard flexes and destroys other chips soldering on the board. Common sense really but i was in a rush as forza 3 just came out. heh. Hardest part about the job is popping the case off. I followed this guide. http://www.instructables.com/id/Fix-...ithout-towels/

Summary.
Dont overtighten.
Dont flex the crap out of your motherboard and you will be fine
