Default Google Chart Tools

Just noticed this new toy from Google and wondered if anyone's using them:

http://code.google.com/apis/charttools/

You can embed charts pretty easily via a simple URL, for example:

[ img ]http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?cht=p3&chs=250x100&chd=t:60,40&chl=Hello|Wor ld[ /img ]

Gives you this:

If you want to be more fancy there's a way to make interactive charts as well, but for forum-type use those static ones are more compatible and simpler.

Looked into these before, mainly I prefer locally generating this stuff. Possibly because I work with larger datasets, I guess.

yeah I read about this, looks pretty awesome.

In the past I've used the Microsoft ASP.NET charting controls on some intranet websites, they'great. I'd consider using these in the future, but not sure on the opinions of the board on having their data sent out to Google.

Very quick and easy tool.

Used it a while back for a now abandoned project here.

Been around for a while. Coincidentally I just started playing with it at work on friday. The interactive ones are great too, and they don't even use flash :P

I'll definitely be using them in an upcoming project. Very easy to set up.

I don't think sending your random data to google has a big implication, considering most of the time there is no way for google to understand the context of the information.

Yeah, we use them at work to keep track of usage information for customers - the bar graph dynamically scales which is nice, especially when the usage varies from 300mb/month to 504gb/month (which I believe is the record).

I used it at work a few years ago to graph all sorts of climate data and it worked really well.

There are some pretty cool javascript alternatives around like flot and graphael - but google chart is hard to beat for simplicity.

Don't people feel concerned that they are sending their data to google though? I guess it's ok on a public forum such as OCAU, but it would be nice to be able to download the tool, and build your own version locally...

Use excel or Gdocs-spreadsheet to create the images and then export the graph? Won't that get the same result, without leaving potentially important data around.

Oh and Agg, I should report your post. You should know better then to hotlink images your not hosting yourself.

Yeah, thinking back, my post makes no real sense given that this is a web app.

I agree, i've always wanted a nice graphing tool for web apps without using rrdtool, but thats more for line graphs/trends, not so much pie charts
