Default My Overclocking Attempt, need some advice

Hi there

I just wanted to get a little feedback as to whether my overclocking attempt is safe.

My System Specs are:

Mobo: Asus P5KPL-AM EPU
CPU: Intel Dual Core E5300 stock cooling
Ram: 2.00GB Patriot PC2-6400 800MHz CL5

I have done a bit of reading about people using the same setup when overclocking & the process seemed very simple. But I need a little help

Now as for my overcloking attempt.

OC'd the CPU Freq from stock 200 to 250
I left everything else as standard ( Auto ) with out adjusting Ram Timings Ect...

My Result:
2.60GHz OC'd @ 3.26GHz
FSB: 1004Mhz
Vcore Voltage is 1.24

Now I have loaded Prim 95 for a few minutes and experienced an error, Temps are not rising above 60c on Full load.

Question though, My DRAM frequency is now 500.6MHz is this safe? Do I need to adjust Ram Timings or Frequencies manually, or is it ok?
Screenshot of Ram Freq in CPU-Z

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Any advice and tips would great guys.

Thanks

Your RAM is most likely to be the problem, so change the DRAM:FSB ratio down.
Also, change the CPU voltage to something like 1.35v and work your way down until you get the lowest stable voltage.

Ok well, anything above 3.16Ghz, I even tried it at 3.5Ghz it ran fine how ever Prime95 comes up with an error on the test.
Also the temps were fine

I seem to be struggling with this Mobo to overclock. I can't find any option in the Bios to change VCore at all.

Has anybody had any luck with this board getting it any higher?

That motherboard is not very good.

It's a budget board. I wouldn't expect too much out of it.

Yeah i understand it's a budget board.

The CPU's the Mobo support is the Intel core 2 Extreme & Quad as well.

I have read my current Dual Core E5300 can be a good overclocker. How ever would I be best off buying a core 2 Extreme CPU of some sort or a new Mobo?

It would be nice to run Metro 2033 a bit smoother. It's playable at the moment on High settings, the frame rate drop in intense scenes with all settings switched right up. I know it's a taxing game but I'm sure my CPU is holding me back a little.
My Graphics card is a Ati HD5770.

Your not going to be able to get that setup to run metro on high setting at an acceptable frame rate (I call acceptable 60+). I suggest running the game on lower settings. It will still look damn good

dont know the board, but surely it would have voltage adjustment.

you could try loosening the timings on the ram to say 6-6-6-18 and see if that helps.

are you keeping an eye on the voltages in cpu-z? as auto can get fun sometimes. also, keep an eye on the north bridge at the higher fsb, it might be getting more volts on auto, and getting quite warm, might be worth a small fan on the heatsink. I would consider it too hot if i cant hold my finger on the heatsink for abit.

though i'm still learning aswell, so anyone feel free to correct me if im wrong.

There is my Core Voltage on the board only Southbridge & Northbridge can be adjusted & also i dont think I can tinker with ram timings. You can only change the speed of the ram.

This really isnt a overclocking board from what i can gather

the ram timing often pop up when you change the ram setting from auto to manual.

what are you using to monitor temps? i cant see anything on your desktop...
i find hwmon good.

prime will push the ram abit harder then some stuff, thats why its used for stability testing. i've had an overclock fine for gaming and normal use, but on on prime on intel burn test it fails.

the other option instead of loosening timings on the ram is to up the voltage, i assume you can change ram voltage yea? whats it at currently?

I'm using HWMonitor and Real temp.

The OC 3.5Ghz was running fine but failed in Prime95 so clocked it down to 3.1Ghz.

I dont have control over the Core Voltage. With the Ram there is a option could Memory over voltage is that the one?

seems to be rated at 1.9, start there maybe, though i couldnt find anything about min or max from my quick google.

I run my corsair at 1.85, though it seems to be rated at 1.9 from my google searches, and mine seems stable, though i havent pushed the fsb yet, still running ram at its rated 800 (4-4-4-12)

Does memory over voltage sound like the right Voltage to be changing?

Also with your suggestion, 6-6-6-18 timing. The max it will go is 15 not 18
