Default Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7?

hey all ive got vista atm and my pc is running pretty slow so im thinking of restoring + i just like the feel of a new pc.. i hate compatibility issues and lag caused by showy interfaces.. in light of this ive been tempted to revert to windows xp.. however i can purchase windows 7 or keep my copy of vista just as easy...

anyone got some comments on the subject?

Computer specs?

I'd install Windows 7 and run the Windows Classic theme.

Win 7.

No brainer. It will run fine with a fresh install, it's quicker than Vista and about 1000 times more secure than XP. Why run an OS that's 9 years old if you don't have to?

Windows XP is old...and just isn't supported in the way it once was...why use a 9 year old Operating System?

I guess if all the eye candy and latest and greatest features don't bother you then XP will still do the job.

Windows Vista is ok...I have nothing against it...but it just can't compare to Windows 7 in terms of stability/performance/usablility/security....your hardware will run Windows 7 easily...

Windows 7 is easily the best option.

I was using XP right up until a couple of months ago, when I finally decided to check out Windows 7.

I still love XP but have to admit Windows 7 is great!

It takes a little bit of getting used to, but overall I think Win 7 is awesome, the only thing that annoys the hell out of me is not being able to move the damn show desktop button next to the start menu!

I'd definitely say give Win7 a go, if you don't like the glassy aero crap it's easy to turn it off and if you dislike the Win7 look then just switch to classic view.

if you can get win7 professional, the windows xp mode is fantastic incase you need some random little thing to be compatible.

although you stated you just want a simple O/S

i still run xp and its fine, but win7 is great.

win7 vote here

You can have the quick launch bar like Win XP in Win 7 and add the Show Desktop shortcut there.

my vote goes to Win 7, much better then XP

Windows 7.

My justification? I like it, I like it a lot. And because it's a lot newer than the nearest excellent OS I would use: XP......which is still good but getting a little long in the tooth now.

:
<WIN>+D is your friend there - I've moved to using heaps more of the WIn7 kbrd shortcuts, and this one is almost a reflex now. Also, <WIN>+Space shows you the desktop without minimising the windows.

How so?

The closest thing I've seen to it is you make a script or something and just pin it to the task bar.

Yeah, I always forgot Win+D and a lot of the time I'm on the PC I'm like leaning back and just have my hand on the mouse, so using the keyboard gets to be a bit of an inconvenience.

It can be done easily, I have the show desktop shortcut in my quick launch bar and have had for quite a while.
