Default Linux and the internet

Hey guys i currently have a Win98 machine setup with a dial-up connection and a prog called winroute. I basically dialup and winroute distributes the bandwidth (as little as it may be) to the rest of the computers on my network.

What i'm wanting to do is change my OS from Win98 to Redhat 7.3, but i want to make sure that i will have the same functionallity. To do this i would need a program that does the same job as WinRoute. Does anyone know of a prog like this.

I would also like to know if i can connect to my ISP through the command line interface. This would be great as that would enable me to connect from another computer via telnet.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Yes, yes and yes.

IPRoute handles pretty much the same things as winroute, better. Not the easiest program to set up, but once it's running it's great.

As to connecting to your isp through the command line, definitely. You can even surf the web, if your heart desires, using Lynx.

The only thing to look out for is if you have an internal modem, check linmodems.org .

you don't need any program. the kernel can do everything, you just need to get your head around the iptables syntax.

for dialup there is pppd. Should be standard in any distro.

If you use Mandrake, they have a Wizard for setting up your connection sharing - and your Firewall.

Could even be setup by someone under 30!!
