That'd be dependant on how hot your neighbours are.

In other news, I was a bees-dick away from buying the Ibanez RG Southen Cross on the weekend. Found one in a shop in Albury, marked down from $2500 to $1700 but it just didn't have the build quality I expect of a J-Craft Prestige. Star-shaped fret markers weren't very sharp up close, there was a couple of hairline paint cracks already at the neck join and a couple of small scratches on the body. I wanted to buy it, but I just wasn't feeling this particular example so I left it.

Yep. Good store btw, they have some ace Iby's and the sales guy was chilled. Shame about the RG30AH not being in factory-mint condition.

Got to see Paul Gilbert live a couple of years back, he came into Newcastle to do a small show (~200people?) in our local music store. Brilliant performance, one of the main things that got me into serious guitar playing. He handed me his pick when he walked off stage too

Interesting to meet him in person though, the people who worked at the store went out for dinner with him later. They say he's a really nice guy, but that he's really quite deaf, and the story behind it is hilarious

EDIT: Met Brett Garsed too, a year before that Same kind of small gig aha

I need suggestions on songs/pieces to learn. I'm in a dead zone where I can't find anything to challenge myself with that isn't stupidly hard.

Alternate picking at speed and pinch harmonics are natural, I'm a little fat fingered with bar chords though... and I'm typically horrible at sweep picking and keeping up my speed for longer than short run of a bar or two.

The sort of 'technical' stuff I can play are slower solo's (Black Magic Woman by Santana is a good speed for me at the moment), but I love Metallica and struggle to get Kirks speed and technique on most of his songs (I can do some solo's but mainly intro solo's like 'Fade to Black' and 'One', or the interlude solo to 'Orion', can play all the solos in 'Nothing else Matters' and I'm trying to get up to speed on the solo to 'Enter Sandman' which is slightly too difficult for me but something I can work towards).

The things I'd like to be able to play are the sort of speed you see in Children of Bodom, All that Remains, Lamb of God etc.... all tend to be just too fast (even the verse riffs most of the time).

So yeah, suggestions on songs/pieces to practice? I'm thinking of having a crack at something like 'Always with me, Always with you' by Satriani as it builds up the speed but has plenty of achievable parts as well. Thoughts?

I met him at a similar function. It was quite surreal to see him in person after having spent so many years listening to his music and worshipping video clips of his playing etc. I was a bit starstruck, needless to say...

My suggestion is that you can play anything if you slow it down enough, and it's only really by doing so that you can work your way up to speed (in the proper manner). If there's a particular piece that you just must learn, then that's your best approach. It's amazing how quickly your fingers can become adept at a piece once they've thoroughly learned where they have to go.

The thing about Kirk's solos is that once you have a few of them under your fingers, you've basically learned (a version of) all of his signature techniques and patterns, and transitioning those skills to quickly learn his other solos simply becomes an exercise in note-learning.

On the other hand if you can't technically play "fast pentatonic run X" in one of his solos, then you won't be able to play the inevitably-similar licks in any of his other solos either.

There are some easier Kirk solos - like the acoustic solo in One, the Fade to Black and Sanitarium intros, Harvester, Bell Tolls, etc. And James's few solos of course.

Learning stuff like Satriani can be beneficial - even though you haven't a hope in hell of playing his stuff properly, yet - simply because it makes stuff like Hammett seem so much easier by comparison!

You have to spend years cranking out the metal riffs before you can get into the league of Bodom and LOG playing, it's all about the machine-gun chug becoming so second-nature that you barely even have to think about it, and a level of technique sufficient to facilitate the kind of playing they do (e.g. the effortless economy of motion which makes such riffs manageable). They may just be "simple metal players" but they practice and utilise many of the same principles of good technique as Yngwie-like shredders do - making them pretty formidable players!

Lols.

Nah, just bought a second-hand RG550 which a mate collected for me in Melbourne and he wants to get the action lowered and some of the tarnish cleaned up before he gives it to me.

Time to crack out guitar pro and utilize the old 'half speed' and 'three quarter speed' options methinks

Anyone seen a Maton Lyrebird around anywhere? There were only 50 made so they're pretty hard to find and the few floating around in online shops have been sold. It's a long shot but I thought i'd ask here in the off-chance someone has seen one around...

It's a good piece to learn, covers a lot of different techniques and speeds. Go for it I say, learn the easy bits and work on the harder bits as you go.
