10% GST on the total cost of the instrument and shipping, despite shipping not being included in the $1000 limit, plus customs duties which I think can run to a hundred or two.

But if the actual price of the guitar is under $1000 not including shipping there's no GST or customs duties?

Any idea of the likelihood of US retailers dropping their prices below $1000 even by $50 or so? Is there anyway really to get around it, I've heard you can get them to label it as a gift?

Shops, especially big dealers, bugger-all chance. Individual Ebay dealers are usually more receptive, but you may also need to take a corresponding hit on the insured value. The guy in Japan who shipped my Thunderbird knocked $100 off the declared price for me to sneak under the limit.
Enjoying the quick turnaround? Can you tell I'm at work on a weekend knocking out a dull paper?

I might have to hit up my the local shops and see how much they're going to slog me for said guitar but I'm not anticipating anything special. |

If you want an LP, why not get one that isn't melting?
