so basically it all comes down to having a shop that you can take it back to if something goes wrong.

If you have a look at wikipedia you'll see that while the federal wage might be $4/hr the states will mostly have minimum wages above $7.

So basically you've got shipping and taxes left to justify an almost 100% markup, and even with guitars that go over the $1000 mark, you still get away with it cheaper.

It's a global market now, and unfortunately for the businesses they are having to compete with other countries. That's not the first article I've seen from a retailer justifying their higher prices, and at the end of the day the consumer will base their decision on price (especially when looking at the cheaper end of the scale).

The main reason I bought my last guitar from Australia? The price was competitive with the US - cheaper in fact.

sigh

good question. hadn't noticed that. i was under the impression that the edge pro had been dropped altogether and we were phasing the edge back in which started this year (2010) with some of the JS's and JEM's

Blackout's Vs EMG's - Discuss

To be specific, I've decided to go down the active path... but I'm torn between the two after playing them both at length, so was after some input from you all (partly because the demo guitars used both had rusty old strings).

I'm in a position where I like the sound of the Blackout distorted tone more, but the EMG clean tone more.... so I just can't figure out which way to go. I've spent a shit-ton of time on youtube listening to recorded clips of the two to try and make my mind up.

Note, I've only played both with 9v... so any insight into how an 18v mod changes the tone would be handy too.

So yeah, pro's/con's for both. If you use one of them, why did you choose that model... why didn't you choose the others? etc

Edit: Found this page doing a great comparison between the two in 9v and 18v in the bridge position, but alas they don't do clean comparison. To me, the EMG's sound better in this... http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/e...content-d.html

They are different sounds. Totally different character. The Blackout sounds a lot more "mid smooth", interestingly enough the Slipknot EMTY Blackout has a lot more trebles, possibly to get the EMG81 sound back

I personally prefer the organic sound to the passives, suits my hands a lot more, but I think the proof is in the pudding; you only get Metallica/Slayer cleans from the EMGs, and while I was raised musically on that tone and LOVE IT, it's not a very versatile sound.

Another interesting point is that EMG has reverse engineered the Blackout with the 81-X, 85-X etc. The "dynamic range" etc etc that they were talking about with the 81-X was EXACTLY the same things they were talking about the Blackout. The stats are very similar. Same "more organic sound" blah blah...

I'd DEFINITELY get the Blackouts, if only because the sound is "new". New breed of tone for a new breed of music. EMG81 is an erection in a pickup, but it's 20 years old.

Cheers for that Xplora, much appreciated

I popped into another music store this afternoon and compared the two again on similar guitars (a pair of schecters) with near new strings.

Definitely prefered the 81/85 sound over the Blackouts both on clean and with distortion. Maybe it's my inexperience, maybe it's that I play mostly Iron Maiden/Metallica etc..... but to me they were the sound I was looking for. I definitely see what you mean about a more organic sound on the Blackouts, it really did seem like it had more range.... but the more I weighed it up the sound I was dreaming of was 'the Metallica sound' and that pretty much answered my own question at the end of the day.

So.... I went home, scoped out a set of EMG's at the right price and ordered them

As long as you're happy. Mahogany combined with an EMG 81 is a thing to behold.

Nice one man. I use the 81/60 combo in my S series. I love the 60 at the neck, it's super-creamy.

I don't think I'll ever understand why you'd want that smooth/creamy/bland sound coming out of your guitar.

It's probably most abused in metal.
