Without TTL will be fine. Especially for situations that are not dynamic, like portraiture.

IMO (e)TTL is only useful if the light/ing changes between shots rapidly. If you are shooting where conditions are never changing to a great extent, I would be shooting manual flash anyway, even on my 580EXII .

I've got the YN460-II (has a quicker recharge and you can fine tune the power levels)

It's my first flash and I love it. I got it as I was sick waiting for the newer iTTL flashes come out (YN468), but like bubblegoose said you don't really need it. Plus manual has helped me learn exposure and I can usually get a picture within a stop on the first go now.

The flash has gone off randomly once or twice but I can't be sure if it was my trigger or the flash. Quality is pretty good, it doesn't feel like its going to break or anything.

If you've got enough money.. perhaps look for a Sigma 530 DG Super or something in that range which has ETTL II as a starter. If its going to be your primary flash, I don't think having ETTL hurts but the sigma is a good compromise between features and cost.

The problem with the sigma flashes is that I don't think you can mount them with cheapo radio triggers which is a pain in the ass.

The YN640s are great for when you're setting up shots in a studio situation.

I'm not 100% convinced that ettl works (i start to use manual in a dynamic environment, like going out and stuff), but I think its because my camera body rather than flash which is buggering it up.

Wow very glad I checked this thread out - just too a look at the YN-468 and it looks perfect for what I need. Was going to buy the 270EX but I think i'd be better off with a 468 and a 467 for a backup @ around the same price...

+1 for the YN-460II

I ordered two and they are great, especially since they are like $70 each or something

For basic portraits like you said you'll be using them for, you SHOULD be running manual settings anyway
