Angry PS3 Restore Error 800283f0 - Help!

On the weekend I bought myself a nice shiny 500GB Seagate Sata drive to replace my 40GB PS3 drive. I backed up all of my saved games and game data after deleting all of my music / photos / videos and the backup reportedly compelted 100%. Once I put my new drive in, and hit the restore function, it gets just over 50% in and reports:

"the restore operation could not be completed. The system will restart. (800283f0)"

Thinking it might be a problem with my Western Digital external HD, I borrowed a different hard drive from a friend, and another, and another and so on - I have now been through SIX different hard drives, but I get the same error every time.

I read a few forums which suggested it was a problem with "locked" game saves. OK....... Goodbye Killzone 2 save, Goodbye Demons Souls save (OW) , Bye Rockband save, Singstar save, etc etc.

STILL THE SAME ERROR!!!

The only thing left on my PS3 at this point are a few saves (Uncharted2, etc) and the game data files fro Rockband and Singstar (not wanting to re-download all of this again - possibly up to 10GB of files) and a few other bits and pieces.

I rang Sony this morning who said "Sorry, I dont know - can we look into it and call you back"

All of the drives Im backing up to are formatted as FAT32, but i cant help think that it has something to do with the Singstar content, having downloaded a few of the songs from the US store?

It DOES restore all of my save games files, user details etc - its JUST the Game Data files that arent copying back.

Any ideas people - after threee days of this Im at wits end!

firstly welcome to OCAU.

hmmm, looks like you've got yourself a doozie there mate.

do you still have the orginal (first) backup you did?
if so i'd restore this to your 40gb because there is no need for you to loose your save files in my opinion, even locked save files, they can be backed up onto USB and transfered back onto the same ps3 if i recall correctly, you just cant tranfer those saves onto a new ps3.

i found this little nugget online, same error and with a 500gb drive too:

I have just found that this appears to have been due to my PSP being registered to my PS3. Unregistered it, completed a backup, swapped in the new formatted HDD, restore completed successfully.
got a psp?

or did the format of the new drive not work properly?

have a browse of this thread

let us know how you go and we'll help you out if we can

good luck mate

edit: another good thread here

Thanks SaMbO, I will follow those links up when I get home.

I did see the problem with the PSP (I have read a LOT of threads about this topic with no apparent answer so far).

A friend of mine just did his and had no problems at all (same size drive etc).

Unfortunatly, those save games are gone (*sob*) as Ive tried backing up about 12 times now. Sony have not returned my call, and I wont be holding my breath either.

I will let you know how I went in the morning.

i know your pain, i accidentally (ok i clicked YES) formatted my 80gb drive from my phat when i was trying to migrate to the slim...
18 months of saves gone in an instant, and i realised as soon as i clicked yes... but it was already too late...

Bleugh - it might be time to give up.
I went through and deleted everything else I could think of (Except Singstar and RB stuff) and STILL no love. Tried new drives, tried reformatting old drives - ive done EVERYTHING - even gave Sony a call back who said "can we call you back" to which I said "umm, thats what you told me this morning". Nothing - the only thing they could suggest was a corrupt backup to which I said "Youre telling me that Im getting a corrupt backup every single time - over the 20 or so times Ive tried!?!?" Its not like Sony havent seen this problem, its all over their boards and the forums in general, but not an answer - looks like Ill be downloading 10 GB of stuff again - GROAN.

Lets hope I dont have a problem doing THAT!

It might be a problem with the new drive. PS3 is only Sata 1, so sometimes you might need to make sure the the new fancy 500Gb drive (which will be Sata 2 or 3 no doubt) is set to Sata 1. You can usually do this by changing or adding a jumper on the back.

Given it backs up save game but not the data, yeah I reckon it's SingStar.

I had a slightly similar problem on a backup where although it restored everything without complaining, none of my SingStar DLC songs were there. The crap thing was, I couldn't download them again (SingStar only lets you download once), and it wouldn't even let me buy them again because they showed up as already bought.

I had to ring Sony and they reset my download register which let me download them all again. Yeah it was a lot of download, but at least they weren't gone.
