Question To sell or keep

Hi Guys,

Just going through the throws of whether to keep my handhelds or sell them. I'm conscious of sellers remorse :P I don't currently have, nor for a time to come have a space to display them and use is infrequent.

I'm after what people have thought after they have sold their retro stuff. Also, what's been the deciding factor for people to hold on to it?

Sell or Horde

Game gear: $20pp

Seriously though, I don't think I could sell my old consoles. At the same time, I couldn't just keep hoarding stuff or it would take over my house. Maybe try and set some limits about what systems (or series) you want to collect for. For example, I'm on a mission to collect every LucasArts adventure game

EDIT: I commiserate with you about lack of space btw. I have a reasonably small collection of games but I'm forced to keep them in storage boxes because our house is too small to setup a display area.

I keep my old retro stuff primarily for sentimental value.

Even if its worth a fair bit, or if its not worth selling at 'x' price. I'd keep it.

Sentimental value is worth more than anything.

if it doesn't cost you anything to keep and they are being stored in a good area and you aren't desperate for money...keep em.

im never going to get rid of any of my retro stuff if i can avoid it.

I'd keep it.

However there are people out there who will pay good money for stuff in good condition.

I've regretted everything I've ever sold. I now hoard everything, and have done so for over two decades with great satisfaction.

Each to their own, but the sentimental value of my hobby stuff means a lot to me.

I'd keep them. Unless you really need the money, what will you gain from selling them? I've sold stuff I later regretted.

Like Elvis, I get great pleasure from all the stuff I've collected (and I do get use out of it which is different to your case).

Otherwise, sell me the Nomad :P

I agree with everyone else so far. The sentimental value / memories and busting out an old console out of the blue for a bit of nostalgia is great.

I know I kept my commodore 64 for years through several moves and on one of them I just let it go to the trash, regretted it ever since.

If i had the space i guess i wouldn't be asking the question. I know if they were out on display i'd pick them up and knock over a game or two of sonic on the Nomad or Metal Slug on the Neo Geo Pocket Color.

The way i am thinking at the moment though is that i am wasting these things in a cupboard and i know others would get more from them. Perhaps my nostalgia post a sale would be revived via emulators? who knows.

The Lynx and the Game Gear are the ones i played the most as a kid and therefore are the ones i have more of a tie with.... sounds weird when i put it like that

i sold my saturn and lynx at a time when i thought i didn't want them, it's been quite a task to get even a small part of the collection back.

if you sell it now, guarantee in several years you'll be trawling ebay or whatever looking for replacements.

Urgh, man I hate trawling ebay. You always get 50 pages of guys asking outrageous prices or sales that are like $5 + $100 postage.

Another reason to keep them in the first place, since this new section has opened i have grabbed a game boy colour, gameboy advance, nintendo DS (original not lite) a Halo 360, a gamecube, a nintendo 64, and a PSP( not retro I know)I have been hunting second hand shops and e gay

I sold too many near new items when I was younger, lots of game and watches, a Lynx, a dick smith wizard plus heaps more that I regret, I will never sell off my gaming gear again and the new purchases are going into a cabinet

They are pretty small, just put them in a box together.

I have a large neogeo pocket collection that I stopped playing since I bought my DS, it just sits in its own box. I'm keeping it because it'll be an ebay bitch to get again. Plus it's out of the way.

There are certain things that I think I will hang on to hell or high water but others that I picked up, played around with (or in some cases didn't even do that) and don't really have an emotional attachment to beyond my pack rat mentality. I have from time to time, when the urge hits (aka wife subtly pointing out that the car cant fit in the garage anymore) I will tidy something up, play I mean test it for a few weeks and put it on fleabay.

It was pretty much more to have than to use - sitting on a shelf didn't do much good and my free time was used in other activities, so I liked the idea of someone wanting the stuff - hopefully playing with it and getting a few bob for the trouble not a bad thing...

The last few things that went away include an Atari Jaguar (with JagCD) with a few games and an Emerson Arcadia 2001 with about 15 games. I don't really regret those things going even though I have had them for over 10 years having found them at garage sales/online. For the Jag, there's emulation and the Arcadia... well to call the game quality crap, would be mean but not far off the mark - funnily though a completist in Germany was hassling me for the details of the who bought that since he was desparate for one game to round out his collection, he blamed his wireless connection from dropping out at the last minute but I guess that is the risk you take when you snipe.

For those that have the ability to store everything they wanted in their childhood and had (or wanted to have then but had to wait until later in life) I'm kind of envious but kind of ok about it too (at least that's what I tell myself when I cry myself to sleep having given my toys away )
