[VIDEO] Wivenhoe Dam Upgrade Construction Time-lapse

Here are some construction time-lapse videos from the Wivenhoe Dam upgrade which occured between 2003 and 2005. The main aim of the project was to flood proof the dam to protect the main spillway during a 1 in 100,000 year flood event along with the protection of ten critical bridges downstream. Another benefit was the temporary increase in flood storage.

Other upgrades were the information centre on the western side of the dam wall, the entrance to Cormorant Bay and other legacy works in the region.

Wivenhoe Dam has two purposes being to provide flood mitigation to protect Brisbane and is the main water store to South East Queensland.

All time-lapse was captured using a Canon PowerShot S45 tethered to a notebook. Shooting interval general varied from 5 - 7 seconds with the odd one at larger intervals.

Earthworks Activities

Various big boys toys were used during the excavation of the spillway chute including dozers, trucks, excavators, graders and a road profiling or milling machine.

I have about 50 sequences. Some are pretty boring but some are good. I was going to go through them and dump out the better ones at 720 and upload them if there was enough interest.

What I found was funny was I'd show some back in our office and there's engineers with years of experience going 'wow... so that's how they lay kerb or install guardrail'

How are yours not working? I always add some tags but never tested them, just assumed that it worked.

Yeah, I was pretty lucky to be onsite for about a year. I have also done some others on a few other projects and some turned out pretty good. Might see if I can post them too.

And I have just started a long term capture of the Audi dealership next door to us in the Valley as they are building a new showroom.

What equipment did you use to make this Redav ?

A Canon PowerShot S45. It was tethered to a notebook. It's also the camera that I have dusted off to do the Audi joint next door. These days I have two (one's works) S80's and an S90 that I have started using CHDK with.

Intervals vary from 5 seconds (that's the minimum that RemoteCapture would allow) up to 7 or 10 seconds. I use Adobe Premiere Pro to compile them.

It will be a good test and I'm bummed that I haven't had a chance to head out there to have a look. If it fails, I never worked on it

what was your role?

Draughtsman. Started in the alliance office in Sep 2003 for three weeks work and walked off the job just on two years later. I spent about 14 months onsite for detail design / construction drawings, RFI's (request for information) and DSN's (designer site notes). While I was out there I photographed and time-lapse construction activities. I walked around site every day I could to see how things were going and how stuff was built.

We even had one of the wages guys parachute into the chute on what he thought was his last day. His contract was extended and we grabbed his footage. Looked wicked.
