Default Will Radeon 5970 work on Seasonic 650W PSU

Just wondering if anyone has a Radeon 5970 running on a 650Watt PSU? I currently have a Seasonic 650Watt unit and I'm looking to upgrade my video card.

Which Seasonic model you to have? Either way it should be sufficient.

a hx-620 runs CF 4890s if that means anything. Pushing it though.

From what i can tell you would be cutting it close pending on the other components in your system.

Check this out:
http://techreport.com/articles.x/19404/10

5970 is using 156/407 watts idle/load
5870 CrossFireX is using 151/483 watts idle/load

That's probably measured at the wall/socket (might wanna check the article) so you'd have to factor in overhead/inefficiencies of the PSU.

That said I think a 650w PSU will be fine for the 5970, however with the 2x 5870's you're PSU needs to be running at like 75% efficiency at full load based on the figures from that article. Most good PSU's will do this, but you'd want some head room.

Yep, they will be at the wall. Haven't seen any sites that monitor the power off the cards directly. All i've seen are at the wall.

I've got a Seasonic X-650 650W.

The official website says it needs :

"650 Watt or greater power supply one 75W 6-pin and one 150W 8-pin PCI Express® power"

I'm assuming my video card has those cables / ports. Anyone know for sure?

While it should just scrape in pending on the other components in your system.

I would worry about it when the time comes for a second 5870. As chances are it will work without much issue.
