Default GTX 470 SLi Fail, anything can be done?

Hi Guys!

Mate rang me up this morning, finally got time to do his new rig.

His GTX 470 SLi rig that is He was so happy.

Until he called me crying, cards sit to close together he claimed, the first card got extremely loud!

I went around to help him out, he was correct, I grabbed a program to monitor temps, first card got to 109°c, OUCH!

With one card though, 70°c! nice temp for a GTX 470.

Anyway, since I am not an Nvidia man, anything that can be done to stop him crying?

Is there anything he can do to run SLI?
Would it be worth getting a slim 8800GT dedicated to PhysX?

My guess, is I will have to post his card on here for sale, lol.

Thanks in advance.

Which cards? if they are Palit dual fans, they need at least one slot between them or the first card will throttle back.

They are the Palit cards, dual fan. First card did throttle back!

Not sure if I can use slow 1 and 4, but 4 will stay at 8x I think. And his PSU is in the way in his case.

Ok, back at his place.

His case does not have bottom PCI=E cover thingy to fit the card in bottom slot.

We can put his PSU up top though, but it don't matter.

post a pic mate, its hard to see whats the issue, adding in a 9800 wont solve anything, also need complete PC spec.

Also lets test oif the 470 that hit 109 is damanged, take them both out. Put the hot GPU back in. Test it by itself.

Card is fine, it is out and the PC is running 1 card ATM.

Looking in to another case that will fit them.

On the cheap side we got the Lian-li K62 and K62R.

can do what i did, get a decent 80mm case fan and zip tie it on, blowing down between the cards, I also have a 140mm mounted on the side of the case feeding the 80mm with fresh air, made at least 25-30 degrees different to my 460 sli setup

So he went for SLI without considering the layout and cooling, nice.

dont get the R it's to RED.

The standard blk is nice, Be great to see how the 470 fit in length though. Could easily get some extra cooling in that case to get that top GPU cooler around the mid 80s or so.

He has Crossfire in there before, I guess he assumed.. His cooling is fine, it is the after market cooler on the card that is causing the issue, it needs room to cool itself, unlike the stock cooler.

Planning to have 1 card in top x16 slow, and the other in the x8 slow #4, hope the SLI bridge is long enough!

What a stupid post i mean really if you bought two gpu's you would expect them to work in there intended area of use ie 1slot spacing or jammed together as would be the case if it was used in tri sli anyway.
I assume the purchaser of the cards assumed like all other cards they would be fine with barely any space between them just a failure in design of the cards really which limits them to users which spaced out boards.

The refernece cooling design works ok in SLI jammed together.

This dual fan design however does not, after some more research a few other have had the same issue, only really good for single GPU solutions.

However, my solution above should work, just need a 8 expansion slot case to do it, I hope it works, lol.
