Default The "I have a very hot i7" Thread

Hi all, I made this thread for all crap batch i7 owners to unite and help each other with ideas and settings alike. I know a few people on the forums with hot batches, so perhaps we can start helping each other with settings here...and vent our anger towards intel for making our CPU's in the first place

I have a question though, If you have a 930, what voltages do you need to run 4ghz with the ram at around 1500mhz.

I hope this is a good idea.

How hot does your 930 get? Have any screenshots? I think the 930s normally run 4ghz from 1.25-1.3v stable...

Maybe start a list of all your batch numbers in the OP for more info.

4 GHz? No speed step and C1E?

No wonder it's hot :-D

It's a 125W cpu overclocked with extra voltage. 150W+ baby...

Hi. Assuming you are using 188 bclk (with ram multi @8x to get 1500mhz), and 21x cpu multi, you could try to go 22x cpu and reduce bclk to 181 to achieve the same clock. Lowering bclk for me seems to require less volts...

Not sure how good the ram is, but at 1448mhz you may try to tighten the timings.

My ram is far from the best, its kingston value ram. 1333mhz at 9 9 9 24.

My computer doesnt seem to like that turbo multi. I get around 95 degrees at 4.2ghz @ 1.36v

Ill be looking into ways I can reduce the vcore.

I think that's probably normal mate.

mine is 4.05ghz
- 21x193, 1.25 vcore with the ram running at 1544.
I just passed an 8 hour OCCT test, which peaked at about 95 degrees. Climbed steadily up there after the first four hours of being consistently about 65.
To get to 4.2 you need A LOT more voltage and A LOT better cooling.
I'm going to try and squeeze mine to 4.1 (I know it will do it, but I probably wont run it at that 24/7) but wouldn't dream of going higher than that on air. over 4.1ghz is for water.

Also forget about the turbo multi, switch that shit off and stay at 21.

If you have a really cool chip then you could possibly go to 4.2ghz on air during winter.
Seriously though why do you need to run your cpu at 4+ghz?

for me 3.8ghz@1.16v-56 degrees max temp*
4.2ghz@1.288v-65 degrees max temp*
thats really a lot of volts for an extra 400mhz, is it really worth it?

I can't imagine my temps if my setup wasnt watercooled.

*HT on, test used linx 4GB ram 10 passes

I do get your point mate. I do it just for fun, it takes a stupendous amount of voltage to get from 3.8 to 4, and even more from 4 to 4.2.

Hey RayKay, cheers for linking me here.

I'm thinking of getting a better cooler in order to OC to 4GHz.

I think I can do it, but the temps are holding me back a bit.

Man, I think I have 4ghz stable and still hot, im gonna try and hit 4.13, keep getting errors at 90 degrees. Damn! Have to lap my Mega.

But can I ask, you know the backplate on the i7 socket (the small silver thing). I didnt have to remove that right?

I'm not sure, you probably shouldn't have if it's meant to be there?

iirc, the backplate for the mega had indents on it to probably go around the socket backplate. Lets just hope these are fool proof .

Hi guys, yes the 930 are a warm chip and most peeps I know get to 4.0ghz without any fuss on air, but this seems to be the threshold, it seems any higher then volts and heat starts to become an issue.

Mine is running at 4.2ghz at the moment but the temps are up there. Here my LinX run

However, one thing to note is that your system will never reach these temps in normal everyday use.. I have coretemps running in the background all day, playing games, photoshop, video editing and max temp is around 68*. So dont stress to much about stress-testing temps!

Yep! Linpack stresses your system way further than in any real life situation. The closest I got to stable at 4.2 hit 95 in less than 60 seconds. Could you please post your basic settings so I can give em a whirl.

Cheers
