If you do not have the correct paperwork, customs will estimate the value of the goods and their decision is final, regardless of whether the goods are for personal use, a gift, commercial samples or imported goods for sale.

The system is not designed in your favour, I believe the only way to avoid the import duty under the USA FTA is to have a certificate of origin of manufacture. The only way to avoid GST is for personal goods to be < $1000AU, commercial qty's will always attract GST.

What are the chances of your shipment not being inspected? An itemised receipt is in your best interest, a customs broker is recommended.
Yea I've already thought of this. I've done a fair bit of importing and I understand how the system works. Basically the idea is to get a shared container and class each chassis as a separate entity, therefore no single person is responsible for goods over $1000 which I haven't made clear yet (sorry)

I will be generating individual purchase orders for each independent person to Norco directly and Norco will be sending them via shared container. As far as customs are concerned we never organised a "group buy" we just show happened to all order chassis at the same time and Norco decided to ship a shared container.

If this doesn't work then we are fucked basically, but I am still working towards getting a definite exception if the container were to arrive.

Absolute worst case scenario is that we have to pay import duty 5% and GST 10%. Which will drive up the price of each case by about 1% or about $50.

Thats still a damn site cheaper than individually ordering from ipcdirect i.e. $395 + $220 postage (USD)

Happy days...

And, I'm thinking or creating multiple raid groups.

So, something like each column then becomes a raid5 group then using zfs or lvm to stripe over the 4 raid5 groups. This should allow me to grow the array 6 drives at a time.

Not sure if this should go in a separate thread, but can those that have their name on the spreadsheet (or are thinking about it) post what they'll be using in it - mobo / RAM / RAID card / HDDs / etc. Just want to get a bit of an idea before I commit to putting my name down.

UPDATE

OK to those that have ordered cables, Norco don't actually make them they get them supplied from an o/s OEM. They basically make no margin on the ones they sell in IPCDirect and can only offer me that retail price + $280USD shipping. I've updated prices to share the cost of this.

Screws ($8) HDD trays ($5) Rails ($26) are still available through Norco included with the shipping container.

As per my previous comments, I will most likely NOT be taking orders myself. What will happen is that we will generate individual purchase orders to Norco and you will be responsible for wire transfer into the account. You will therefore get an invoice and hopefully will not have to pay import duties + GST.

Updated prices that should be getting close to final figures.

Some people will use an Intel server board like the S3210, some will use whatever they've got lying around like myself. I'll be using a perc 6i with an amd x2.

This case will replace my stacker. I'm buying it cos of the hotswap bays. It makes it a lot easier to change out drives, chop and change, and hold all my drives in the one case.

Hang on a sec. The cable prices are going UP? IPC website says $12.50 and $12 for the 8087->8087 and SATA->8087 respectively. You have now listed them at $15 and $15?

I'm confused aswell is that 350 price landed or do we have to pay shipping to australia per unit and import customs? A final price per unit would be handy

probably it's (total number of cables+220)/total number of cables

since we have to split the shipping for the cables and they will not be sent from the norco distributor prices will go up a little bit depends on how many cables

Yea like I say we need to pay the price listed on them plus shipping so thats the price Norco gave me per unit including shipping.

$350 chassis is the price Norco have also given me for the extra paperwork involved in splitting the orders.

If anyone is getting shirty about pricing or gets a suspicion that I am trying to take a slice for myself, feel free to fuck off, you're paying Norco directly.

doing some of my own research into power, samsung drives appear to use only 5v, and at load 2amps per drive... so spinup assuming you cant do staggered with 20 drives is 40amps on the 5v rail, ignoring the fact there is also a cpu mobo etc... what psu's do you guys plan on using lol?
