Question Digital audio recorder with great "hearing"?

Anyone know of a good digital audio recorder?

It should preferably be able to pick up any sound audible to the user. Even sounds that are distant or faintly above background sounds.

What type of recorder are you after? A directional microphone you see in spy movies for targetting a region of sound, or an omnidirectional device that is sentive to sounds from all angles?
