Question ATI Overscan Issues

I have a 5570 running Catalyst 10.8 and having a few issues getting the res right for my 46" W series Samsung TV. (connected by HDMI cable)

It does not seem to "detect" the TV other than saying "SAMSUNG" so I have to set the resolution manually. Pretty sure I have chosen 1920X1080P@50Hz currently, Though there are a LOT of different ones available to "Add".

GPU Scaling is ticked, the problem is no matter how much I fiddle with the Overscan Slider the desktop is always just a tad too small, or a tad too big.

Any thoughts on how I can get it the right size?

Have you had a look in the Picture options menu of the Samsung TV? Settings like "Screen Fit" and adjustments related to that may help in getting the picture to the fill size of the screen.

While i'm not sure if this option is in your specific model, it might be a good place to start.

Does the Sammy have any scan related options within its OSD menus? I had to disable overscanning on the Panasonic before i could get anywhere with CCC.

I have only had this issue with 10.7 and 10.8 cats TBH, previous to that setting overscan flatout (up 15% I think) always neatly filled the screen.

Never really thought about checking the TV Options, will have a look through them tonight.

I guess you could always go back to the previous drivers unless you need something from the new releases.

Yep. 10.7 added GPU Acceleration for VLC which was a huge step forward for my old P4 playing HDrips.

You need to check which HDMI port is meant for PC use...

There is usually one that "just works" for PC monitors.

Often that port has a meny option to disable overscan.

I know we guys don't like reading, but PLEASE look inside your TV manual. Chances are it's covered in there...

A quick google suggests that Samsung has a 'justscan' option, which disables the overscan that needs to be used for DTV broadcasts.

HDMI Port is PC, it actually says PC when selected. In my defense this has worked perfectly prior to 10.7 which is what leads me to believe its a catalyst issue and also why I have never really bothered playing with the TV Settings.

Before it would just auto detect my TV, and there would actually BE a TV menu in CCC to slide the overscan all the way to the right and bobs your uncle so to speak.

Now it took me 3 days of googling to even find the overscan option, so well hidden it was.

Still it would seem I have some checking to do in the TV to see if I can compensate for whatever is now borked in CCC I guess. Will let you know what I find tonight.

I'm also unconvinced that I have chosen the right manual resolution as there are so many to choose from, will post exactly which one it is when I check tonight too.

Aha my hunch was right and such a simple thing too. D/led the manual and the right res is 1080P@60Hz not 50. Doh.

it not only fits perfectly, but the picture is nicer and the HTPC menu on the sammy is no longer greyed out either. And yes the correct input is HDMI2/DVI, though all the PC menus remain greyed out, I assume they are for the VGA input.

So in reality the only offputting thing about these cats is the auto detection not working, and even that is not a biggy if you know the right res to add.

Glad you got it sorted, and it was simple as switching it to 60hz and not 50hz.
