Hi, I just came off a fresh rh install cos I was having some pppoe problems. Anyways, I told it in the install to install caching-nameserver which in turn installed BIND because I wanna set up some dns caching on my LAN to get some extra shit (as little as it may be).
Anyways, Ive got everything working, but what do I do now ? I tried running 'named' but log shows all these weird error messages... Do I still need to configure anything even tho I installed the caching-nameserver rpm ? I thought all it does is setup BIND to act as a caching-nameserver by option its conf file ? |

I've never installed bind on my redhat machine but heres some speculative stuff for you to check (been a while since I've used bind):
- Chances are the ports are blocked somewhere, check all the usual suspects - You probably still need to manually configure bind even though you installed using a rpm. - Follow through the bind howto as it has all the info to set it up as a caching nameserver (manually) After you have checked the above and its still not working post the error messages or search groups.google with them. I don't understand what you mean by "got everything working" if its not. -- othy

Go look at the DNS-HOWTO.
It has a section on setting up a caching nameserver.

Dont use BIND. Thats definately not suitable for your situation. Use DJBDNS.

ok, I think Ive set it up properly.
Ive set my clients to .1 and in resolv.conf set nameserver to 127.0.0.1 and everything seems to be working. Is it possible for me to see if BIND is calling an external query to an entry which is not in its cache ? |

I agree with Narkov. Use djbdns instead which comes with the program dnscache. This works only as a caching name server. Since it does nothing else, its really easy to configure.
You can find djbdns at http://cr.yp.to/ |

If you have bind setup correctly now I don't see any need to move to djbdns, as long as you secure bind (oxymoron?), theres plenty of guides to do this. -- othy
