$100 'decent cooler' setup
vacuum inside of case every now and again.
$100 New cooler for future cpu bracket/system setup
Ability to push cpu to 'example' 4.0ghz at 70 degrees high volts.
Early cpu death at high clocks.
Better performance.

Water cooling:
$300-450 setup
vacuum the rad every now and again, 6 month 100ml topup.
$40 for new bracket for cpu block
Ability to push cpu to 'example' 4.5ghz at 45-50 degrees normal volts.
Prolonged CPU lifespan and minimal effect, longer lasting cpu until cpu clocks start to fail/skip.
Alot better performance then above.

In the end, you will buy multiple cpu coolers over the years, were as we will use the same rads and pumps, with replacing only the cpu block/mounts, while enjoying better performance.

Once you have a decent WC setup, you can afford to buy cheaper CPU with the same result as a normal higher spec air cooled one, thus more money saved.

That is assuming the 'cooling' is for the cpu only. getting into GPU cooling is another bag of kettle chips. Not really needed GPU's dont scale like CPU's imo.
what? no

TRUE from 5 years ago can be used on todays, and next years, CPU's, witha $5 bracket

so... it's $100 (well, in reality, $50 + 1 or 2 fans of your choice) + $5 every upgrade..
and when you say 70 degrees, you mean under linx? i get 4.2 @ 70 in linx with a TRUE equivalent, 40ish day to day though, no hotter than watercooling... sure i could get an extra 200mhz or something with water... for significantly more than the CPU itself cost.

as an example, i had a Q6600 @ 3.8ghz on air for 2 years, still does that in another motherboard and machine without issue

TRUE is only 2-3 years old. The TRUE is basically a copy of the Noctua NH-U12, which was released some time in 2007, and the TRUE wasn't released for at least 6 months after that.

5 years ago was the TR XP-90/XP-120, and the zalman CNPS-9500. Is anyone still using these?

well even so, until a -better- HSF design is released, these ones can be freely reused.

same as waterblocks.

But noone still uses the XP-90 or CNPS-9500. The point is, air coolers are going to be replaced with something new every few years, just like a CPU block. So regardless of wheter you have air or water, you're going to need to spend $100 every few years for a new block/HSF. The ongoing costs of WC are about the same as the ongoing costs of Air.

well really, the TRUE is still at the top of the game, besides the triple tower ones, with the 3*120mm fans, though they run into all sorts of clearance issues among other things, so, what's pretty close to 3 years on, still doesn't NEED replacement.

Had system with TRUE @ 4GHZ (e8400) ~1.35v which is now near dead (EM). Went watercooling with the same specs, abused it: cpu = still alive.
Watercooling when done right needs little maintenance, hell I never even needed a top up in my closed loop for a YEAR.

It costs though, but hell is it fun...

Is it really worth the hassle of having to braze 1/4" barbs onto a car heater core or radiator, when you can buy a ready-made rad for $60? Seriously mate, just buy one from PCCG, heaps easier and most are optimised for low-noise fans too.

Talk to Frenchlick, he had a copper heater core on his desk with a whole bunch of 120mm fans attached to it. I think it was out of a Falcon?
