How odd, I had to go and pick mine up from a warehouse and show photo ID that matched the name & address on the parcel, couldn't even get my roomie to pick it up for me - normally they can because it's normally just a matching address they need :\

There are literally squillions of books available online for free, all you need is Calibre to convert into the right format to suit your Kindle

so to confirm a kindle in australia will be no different to a kindle in the USA with regards to content availability and pricing?

are there any titles that are USA only?

yes. can't think of any off the top of my head, I've come across them before, it tells you in amazon. if you're logged in and your location is set to australia, anything you can see available to buy is available to buy. On that note there are some aus titles that the USA guys can't get. I think that goes for the UK too, and probably a heap of other counties.

Yep Sammus is right. The issue lies with Australian publishers. You'll find that prices can vary between regions too. We've been suffering for years now with gaming digital content on Steam, for example. All due to publishers

yeah you can change the location of your kindle, read a few pages back and it was mentioned that someone changed their kindle address like 5 times or something to get all different stuff. And you can't circumvent physical media stuff either, heaps of things I've tried to buy from amazon gets removed from my cart at checkout telling me they cant ship it overseas.

I bought mine yesterday. ETA end of January. I'll post up a mini-review as well when it arrives. I'm sure others will be interested to see what my girlfriends thoughts are as someone who is highly addicted to reading physical books.

Not sure if I'm pointing out the obvious here or anything, but anyone who buys a kindle is generally some who reads a lot of books... kinda a bit silly to get one if you dont read

I dunno, but I changed my address to wrigley field USA to get some free word games on my kindle that aren't available to AUS users.

Soo.. can someone just update me in brief - where's the best place to buy a Kindle from? Will it get here quickly?

I'm thinking the Kindle3 is the best ereader around atm

I just received a Kindle 2nd gen off a member here on OCAU. I was looking at getting the latest gen online, but the 7-9 week waiting period would not do.

I'm happy I took a step back to get the device before Christmas. To me it does everything the Kindle3 does that I need. It'll be for my old man, and I doubt he'll notice the difference.

But basically, yanman, Amazon.com is your best bet if you're willing to wait for stock. There's a few of the international versions floating around on eBay, but at a premium, and plenty of people are actively bidding on them.
So officially Amazon is the only place to buy them from, but you can get them BNIB, or near new second hand, from other sources if you look hard enough.
