A hive of bees decided to setup camp in our back tree a couple of years ago and we didn't discover it until pruning back the undergrowth. We called in a specialist bee keeper rather than an exterminator so we know they'll be going to a good home.
The hive got quite large to the point it was pulling down the branch. All up they say it would weigh around 80kg with 20,000+ bees, about 1.5m long by 1.5m round. I was going to attempt to smoke the guys out but Im glad I went the pro route after seeing it all happen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvMkUHrSzcw ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Very cool that the bees found a new home, can wild bees be used for food-grade honey production? Even better considering how many problems we've had with colony collapse syndrome.
How did the apiarist get them to move into the box? Did he put the combs in there with the bees attached? My favourite animals

WOW
how much did the bee keeper pay you? a hive like that would be worth quite a bit I'd imagine.super high five for calling him in instead of an exterminator, there's no need to kill the buggers, they make yummy honey!

Did he kill the bees? I don't think they'd withstand a cyclonic vacuum cleaner
![]() Poor bees they are like, threatened atm with that virus/parasite combo Hope they are still alive... just relocated!

It was free to have them removed once we found the right guy. We wanted to remove them for a while but pest guys kept saying no to the job! Also, they were vacuumed into a special box made for the job, they dont actually go into the vacuum cleaner.

The vacuums are designed so that the bees can withstand the force, so no it wouldn't harm them being collected like that.

Thats awesome, and you get extra points for relocating them instead of killing them.
Given the amount of colony colapse happening all over the world, we need more bees, well if you still want to eat that is.
