....Even with improved voltage regulation, the 8 pin pci-e connectors are going to become the limitation.

When I first heard of the 590 I thought "It'll just be a competitive product at default clocks, but it won't overclock for s***, if you wanna overclock, get separate cards that offer a better cooling solution...."

....Honestly, am I the only person that thinks this way?!

However....

If you didn't have the foresight to get a mobo equipped with at minimum two 8x pci-e slots than the 590 may well be the card for you....

If you want a single NV card capable of NVS with three native DVI connections, than once again, the 590 may well be the card for you....

For every other scenario, including quad SLI/NVS, get individual cards.

I also follow the same train of thought regarding the 6990.
Then you never used a Radeon HD 5970. That was a dual-GPU and until the 6990 was released it was still the single fastest VGA card in the world.

That thing overclocked like a mother fucker. Yet it was a dual-GPU card

it just means the 5970 was over engineered. which is good for us but bad for ati.

It was very good engineering... but bad for them as it lasted in the market for so long and the 6990 even has a hard time battling it out in benchmarks, given that the 5970 is pretty old now.

(this is going OT, but I was using the previous post to make a point... AMD engineered their 5000-series much better than NVIDIA did, which in turn positioned them in the market much better for dual-GPU based tech).

You missed my valid point entirely Anthony.

The 590 is engineered to a standard that matches the 5970.

The 5970 did not have two power hungry Fermi GPU's on it's PCB.

Therefore the 5970 could have power regulation circuitry that didn't need to be an overkill, the 5970 was also a good overclocker due to the energy efficient design of Cypress, it had nothing to do with quality of construction of the card nor did it have anything to do with the componentry on the PCB.

The 590 runs fine at default clocks and moderate overclocks provided NV's voltage limitations are adhered to and temperatures are kept under control - Adding more rugged voltage regulation circuitry would obviously have added to the retail cost of the card thereby pricing it out of the market, the two 8 pin pci-e connectors would also have become the limiting factor.

If you in any way thought a dual Fermi card was going to overclock like crazy, honestly, you were dreaming - It's just not going to happen, and never was going to happen.

Wow Fluid, do you work for nVidia? You would think so with the amount of passion in your posts.

I won't even go into that argument flu!d (you and your arguments/me getting banned constantly with you getting away with it) was the main reason I've stayed away from OCAU for a while.

But, didn't you defend quite proudly I might add, that the Fermi architecture was superior? The 590 is engineered to match the 5970 that is nearly TWO YEARS OLD??

Because of the failures that have plagued Fermi, it is not designed to have dual-GPU without it's issues, NVIDIA did it anyway and look at the teething issues it's having.

hahaha I think that argument is dead, there's no coming back from that! TDP arguments are now closed, or blowing up like the 590's :P

I'm still waiting on being able to send the GTX 570 back to OTA.

2 days to get me an RA number.

------

Genuine question here:

The GTX590 is dual underclocked GTX580's right?

The 6990 is dual underclocked 6970's right?

Ignoring heat and fan noise - if an overclocker wanted to - can you push the GTX590 up to the same clocks and voltages you could push two GTX580's?
