But, didn't you defend quite proudly I might add, that the Fermi architecture was superior? The 590 is engineered to match the 5970 that is nearly TWO YEARS OLD??
I was talking about the construction of the card Anthony, not the performance. For that matter the construction and componentry on the card is just as good as the 6990 - The difference is the voltage regulation on the 6990, as well as the two 8 pin pci-e connectors dont have to cope with two Fermi GPU's.

I also never argued that the Fermi archatecture was superior, hell, it wasn't until the advent of the 5xx series that I decided to actually upgrade to a DX11 card?

Ok, you never argued that at all.

This is where I let you believe that and stop the discussion

Genuine question here:

The GTX590 is dual underclocked GTX580's right?

The 6990 is dual underclocked 6970's right?

Ignoring heat and fan noise - if an overclocker wanted to - can you push the GTX590 up to the same clocks and voltages you could push two GTX580's?

Yes

Yes

It doesn't really seem that way, one would assume you could but the extra voltage needed to get the card up to typical GTX 580 speed causes slow down or death

Yeah very easy, much like the HD 5970 could get to HD 5870 speeds

So ignoring the driver throttling slow down - why can't the dual GTX580 GPUs on the GTX590 be pushed to individual GTX580 speeds and voltages?

i.e. What is it that breaks? What is actually dieing on the card?

- they have less power: 300W per gpu vs 187W per gpu (375W total). you cant expect the 590W to be as strong if you give it only just over half the power per gpu.

- they have less voltage regulators.

I think these are the two main issues preventing matching 580 speeds/voltages.. excluding heat/noise.

Another thing would be temps. Because of the amount of power it chews through (it's the same for 6990 but to a lesser extent), and the amount of heat it generates, the drivers will auto throttle with even a minor (by Fermi). GTX590 and even GTX580, they are known for carking it quite easily because the VRM's aren't cooled adequately when extra Voltages are added. On water, I'm sure you'ld get a GTX590 to GTX580 levels, even higher. Same would apply for the 6990, although because AMD cards do run cooler than Nvidia, it's stock speeds is only a bit off 6970 clocks.

In general, I reckon the GTX590 will absolutely wipe the floor with the 6990 when their both underwater. GTX590 has a much bigger OC headroom than the 6990.

Not having a go at you Fluid but do you really need to put that much passion into Nvidia? I know you'll argue you go with whatever is best at the time etc. but it's quite clear. You're probably blinded by the truth by now however, oh well.

I think some of you should just let things go. Arguing about minor architecture differences achieves nothing, it's quite sad really. Surely you must have more important things to do? :\

Even on water its very difficult to achieve decent oc on 590, the thing is gimped power wise and pushing too much through it will kill it.. It could have been a great card but power requirments cripple it.

if hell were real:

fluid would be stuck in a locked room with an ATI 5770.

I've got a 5770 in my HTPC, bloody awesome card once you understand that CCC is a pain in the arse....

Love my HDMI out with bitstreamed HD audio and a passive 5770 that puts out literally no heat....

....Come to think of it, if a 5770 was hell, it's be a pretty cold, energy efficient place?

Not really the mental image I had in mind of hell at all?!

I guess I picked that card because i had been using it for so long, it's not bad, but it's half a 5870 and ultimately not good enough :P btw there is only one 5770 :P

Just got my Phantom GTX 570 and may I say, WOW this thing is cool. I've run it through some benchmarks at 850Mhz and stock voltages and it hasn't gone past the 60c mark yet! Seriously recommend this to people who want to overclock their crads but can't afford water and don't mind the 2.5 slot space

not on my board, I can fit two because of the pci-e layout, you just need to make sure that the pci-e 16x lanes are 3 slots apart. Most boards use this configuration now anyway. if the are less however then yes, sli will not work.
