I have a couple of questions to those who have a 3GB GTX580 or two in SLI.
Compared to a 1.5GB card, how much slower is it at 2560x1600? Compared to two 1.5GB cards in SLI, how much faster are they at 5760x1080/1200 or 7680x1440/1600? Obviously, there would be a point (ie. stupidly high resolution) where 384-bit memory bit width, which is designed for 1.5GB, could overcome addressing delays associated with doubled memory. Could someone test this?

I've been waiting for a high resolution benchmark review comparing SLI 3GB GTX580's vs SLI 1.5GB GTX580's for ages.

Found this comparo.
I don't know Chinese, but it looks like 3GB is slower with a single monitor setup even at 2650x1600.

I don't really care about the result for the record. Obviously 1.5GB is going to be better bang for buck but I've always been curious.

From the Wednesday review (http://www.overclockers.com.au/news.php?id=971638)
http://www.overclockers.com/wp-conte...cardmemory.jpg http://www.overclockers.com/asus-gtx...?utm_source=pr I wonder how the ASUS GTX580 Direct-CU-II cools the VRM's and RAM chips? Or is cooling of these components not required?

I've only ever used nVidia cards except for one outlier of a 9800Pro. The fan got clogged up with dust and died so I switched back to nVidia.
My current card is a GTX260 (216SP model) and I'm not really looking at the ATi offerings. Want to stick with nVidia as a preference. What's the sweet spot in terms of cash outlay to performance from the current crop of hardware? I note that there's GTX460's, 480's and then the 560, 570, 580 and 590 series of cards. I've been looking at the GTX580 chips. Is this a sweet spot for performance to outlay? Should I be looking at the GTX570? I suspect because based on the price point, the GTX560 isn't the place I should be looking at.

570s is price for dollar point, 580s are too expensive with the relative performance

IMO best way to make a GPU quiet is to get a the cheapest card you can and buy a 3rd party cooler that lets you use your own fans (such as a Thermalright Sharman). A 120mm fan that is proven to be quiet (such as a nexus real silent @ 500RPM) will make less noise than a pair of little fans at a faster RPM IMO. PCCG Prices: Phantom = $319.00 560Ti + Sharman = $229 + $89 = $318 Same price, and should run quitter/cooler. Although the Phantom is 2GB where my combo is only 1GB (up to you if that matters) |

MARS II shall be 3GB unfortunately. http://news.softpedia.com/news/Asus-...d-204402.shtml
ALSO, if you people want a 3gb 580 review in SLI or by itself then check HardOCP. They did a review recently using 2 MSI Lightning Xtremes in SLI They also did a review earlier with just the one card. Most importantly, in the SLI review they tested surround resolutions. So far the EVGA 580 Classified is looking promising... 1.4ghz under LN2 in early testing http://twitter.com/#!/EVGA_JacobF/st...33741524926464
