The competition from AMD 6990 should help keep it's price sharp but I reckon over $950 at launch. The 5970 was over $1000 for a long time so anythings possible - but of course it didnt have any comparable competition for a long time too. Two GTX580's are around $1200 (~$600x2) so it only has to be a bit cheaper than that to be value.

Yeah, I reckon 1.2k would be about right. I mean the 8800Ultra was about there. Don't forget that only the richest of enthusiast will buy these cards. nVidia and AMD won't be afraid of making a fair few bucks from them, especially since their not going to be big sellers.

Nvidia might surprise us with a competitive price considering the 6990 is only a few months away. I would pay $800 for one any higher and I'm better off with a second 580.

A few months away? Why so long? Because its not needed? ie the 5970 is still going strong?

It won't be even close to that if all goes to plan. Both NVIDIA and AMD will be releasing dual GPU cards.

Yeah either way it won't be cheap at launch,I can't remember what the price of the gtx 295 was at launch I remember paying around $850 for a gainward gtx 295 not sure if that was launch price or a bit down the track when they got cheaper.

I think probably 2 gtx 580 cards in sli would be faster than the gtx 590 overall due to the gtx 590 lowered clocks if it ends up similar to the way they did the gtx 295.

When I look at the gtx 580 high price it makes me wonder.

I was looking at my older purchases in my auspcmarket account the other day and I paid $1100 for a stock Asus 8800GTX 768mb in 2006.

Yes but most people that buy a GTX590 (purely surmising here) will be enthusiasts who know how to overclock the GPU's back to, and above their default single card speeds as many people did with the 5970.
But yeh unless there is some extra magic in the GTX590 a serious overclocker would use single cards in sli, tri sli and quad sli for their benching.

$600 for GTX580 is still expensive but you have to remember it is the fastest next gen card on the market.

Yeh I think the GTX590 will be awesome. Especially if it does all the Multi-monitor (3 screens) off one card.

Single card with that much power and function will be very desireable (as will the 6990 )
