Chainbolt...the palamino does have some new architecture...particularly the instrauction and data prefetch to improve memory bandwidth performance ......other than that (which includes a modest performance increase) the palamino is ala tbird but a bit cooler due to core layout mods......

I have to admit, my knowledge is limited about the construction of CPU's. I know more about cars. But I always thought that additional "instructions" are not related to the architecture of a CPU. I thought it's like hardware and software. Am I wrong? A change from the current .18 micron technology to .13 micron, would be a change in the hardware/architecture for sure. But do you think that changing instructions means changing the architecture of the CPU, means the design? I think it's clear that only the .13 micron technology would really mean a step forward, because the current design is limited by heat.Could you explain why the Palamino is "cooler due to core lay-out modifications"? I get my TBird by 8C cooler, when I change the register 62 from B3 to B7 ![]() I haven't seen anything about this on the AMD.com page. If I read the marketing bla bla right, they focus ONLY on the added functions for multiprocessing. And that shows these 1.2 and 1.4 MPs are NOT what we expected (unless you run a server). http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/serv...prodbrief.html Last edited by chainbolt; 2nd July 2001 at 1:32 AM. |
