Nothing - he's just got the same bug I do. It's called tinker-itis.

I'm not expecting much from Ivy though

Well, if the price is good then I might grab the 950 off you when/if you decide to let it go. Possibly the ram too. :P

Maybe, it might surprise you too. If the rumour about it having no cold bug is correct then all records held by Sandy will fall. If 5ghz 24/7 clocks become easier than thats good too.

I'm looking forward to how much improvement we get from Tri-gate transistors.

I'm just pretty shocked that the 2600k I purchased 9 months ago still has nothing significantly faster out. There's faster but nothing mind blowing. I'm convinced the industry is slowing down as home users needs are more than met nowadays, plus the global economy slowdown means making ludicrous stuff for ludicrous customers isn't as lucrative as it once was, so companies are slowly drip feeding products out (more so than usual)

Can't blame em though.
I don't even need an Ivy Bridge setup :/

yeah very much true, to be honest a Q9400 is more then enough for today's users, hell even the oldier Q6600 is more then enough.

Like every other computer enthuist, we just like to have the latest and greatest, however unlike the X58 days, high-end gear just seems too expensive for not much of a performance hit.

You could buy someone a used Q6xxx cpu, put in 8gb, a nice SSD and Win7 64 with a cheap video card for accelerated UI and literally 99.9% of the time, the user would think they were sitting at a supercomputer.

Infact, I have to admit the only reason I have a 2600k is because I did precisely that with my old machine, sold it for more than it's worth (to be fair, I really do give good after sales support)

You think Ivy Bridge would be any better for encoding to x264? I just bought a 2600K a week or so ago, and I also bought a Motherboard from the forums today to upgrade my internet box from a Q6600 into an encoding box.

I was thinking about waiting for Ivy bridge and Z77, but didn't want to wait any longer. I've had these HD-DVDs that I've wanted to finish backing up since 4-5 months ago. Do you think Ivy Bridge would give me much improvement or not really?

I dont really know mate, small gain in IPC is expected along with small gain in 24/7 clocks, so it will do your tasks faster but your 2600K will do it fast too, either will be much faster than your Q6600.

I was just asking in case Ivy had some new instructions or something that might help with encoding tasks.

Ivy Bridge has QuickSync 2.0 (hardware transcoding circuitry). Supposedly, this newer implementation is faster and addresses the image quality issues that was experienced with QuickSync 1.0 found in Sandy Bridge.

For Intel QuickSync support, you'll need to use one of the following software...

* CyberLink MediaEspresso or PowerDirector
* ArcSoft Media Converter or ShowBiz
* Corel Digital Studio or Video Studio
* Roxio Creator
* Elemental Badaboom
* Loilo Super Loiloscope

If you're after something that supports new instructions, then wait for Haswell/Broadwell in 2013/2014. It'll add AVX 2 or "Haswell New Instructions"...Not to mention another evolved version of QuickSync.
