Yes, that's for the Embedded version only, i.e. the .img file. There's nothing about the LiveCD .iso.

I tried this a while back with FreeNAS and I couldn't get it to run in VirtualBox. It just refused to boot to the installer no matter what I tried.

Try formatting the key as FAT before writing the image i had issues with ubuntu and FAT32 filesystem on the key.

Ive never had any issue with booting the freenas iso in virtualbox...
