Default New kernel, old drivers.

Hi, would the modem driver (made for kernel version 2.4.10) work if i upgrade my kernel to version 2.4.19? The 2.4.10 seems to be the latest driver.

Oh, just a quick quick question, does the 2.4.19 have support for audigy card? I know i can get the drivers from sourceforge.net.

Thanks allot

Probably not....

Can you get the source for the driver? If so, you can compile it after you upgrade your kernel.

Cheers,
Martin.

I can get the generic modem drivers source code so it should work. Thanks allot for your help mpot.

Does this mean that if other drivers arent compatible with a certain kernel version, recompiling will fix the problem?

Yes - if you compile the drivers on your system, they'll be compatible with your kernel version.

Cheers,
Martin.

If CONFIG_MODVERSIONS=y in your kernel then you can sometimes use old modules, I've never had much luck trying though and firmly believe that it's better to rebuild your third party modules against a new kernel.

I agree but unfortunately it does not always work. When using hardware with proprietry drivers that is out of the question. At times if you want to upgrade your kernel it means trying the old module with 3 possible outcomes. It works, the machine locks or the machine reboots.
