Default Like to know more on dual setup

Just like to know more on dual setup...

1. Do I need 2 identical CPUs? I thought you do but I have seen a thread in the FS forum with 2 different CPUs (P3-750 & P3-650) installed.

2. Will slokets be accepted for dual setup? I have asus and abit slokets.

3. If I have 2 CPUs of same speed but different format (1 is s370 & the other slot 1), will it work?

4. Are all celeron II cpus (>= 566) non dual compatible?

5. What are the best dual mobo out there that are overclockable? (prefer slot 1)

Thanks

Oh....also, does it matter if I use CPUs from different batch? If not, why?

because the chip construction should be identical for most chips. I take it you mean stepping (ie CCO, CBO). I believe CCO is smp capable but dont quote me and find out more first

How much am I expecting to pay for a VP6?

pippin88: What about the batch no. like SL45Y...etc etc. Does it matter if it is different but uses the same stepping?

I ended up getting a dual 600e combo off another member here, overclocked to 800mhz. Thanks everyone for their input.

Damn it! You already got your stuff before I can anwser!
Oh well...Here's what I would've said...

1. Its recommended (by Intel), you get two CPUs that are the same. It will work with 2 different PIII CPUs.

2. Not all slockets are SMP compatible, even then you have to worry about the mobos being picky about slockets! (you may have to mod the slocket to make them SMP compatible).

Proven fact:
Supermicro PIIIDRE and PIIIDR3 are the most well known for not working with ANY slockets EXCEPT MSI MS6905 Master ones. These slockets are VERY rare, so your chances are low, but not impossible. You also have to mod them to work in SMP!

I have a PIIIDRE and in the process of getting two PIIIDR3, but I "know someone" that can get these slockets for me, and I have a pair of PIII 933Mhz Slot-1 CPUs.

Other mobos are far less picky and work pretty well with slockets.

3. Yes, I've done this once. I used a genuine PIII 933Mhz in Slot-1 format and used a slocket and a FC-PGA one in a dualie mobo without issue.

4. As mentioned, anything above Celeron 533Mhz has its SMP capability removed. No, there is no home mod that can be done to fix this.

5. This answer will be little use, but, the ASUS P3C-D is a dual slot 1 that is overclockable (based on i820 chipset, but doesn't not inherit the problems, extremely solid platform)...

Even with Upgradeware or PowerLeap adapters. (I've seen people overclock PIII-S 1.4Ghz on this mobo, => Dual 1575Mhz without issues!).

I own some dualie PIII mobos (all Intel chipset ones, all rock solid)...

Supermicro P6DBE (Dual Slot 1, BX chipset)
Supermicro PIIIDRE (Dual Slot 1, i840 chipset)
3x ASUS P3C-D (Dual Slot 1, i820 chipset)
ACorp 6A815EPD1 (Dual FC-PGA, i815EP chipset)

Plus
2x Supermicro PIIIDR3 (same as PIIIDRE but with Ultra160 SCSI controller onboard)...Coming soon!

WTF are you digging up ancient threads to add a few lines of stuff nobody cares about? Give it a rest.
