Exclamation Sony PS3 Backdoor found.

Just a heads up:

"Sony can now remotely execute code on the PS3 as soon as you connect. This can do whatever Sony wants it to do, such as verifying system files or searching for homebrew. Sony can change the code and add new detection methods without any firmware updates."

Just a headsup; it's an unsubstantiated rumour that's purely baseless.

I thought it was widely accepted that 3.56 introduced a 'rootkit' of sorts.

A few well known hackers mentioned this a while ago. Sure they could be lying, but I wouldn't even know how you could prove or disprove something like that..

Got it from Blues News.

A 'heads up' is literally, just that.

It may be baseless, but it's been floating around various channels for a while.

Next time I'll post somewhere else.

From what I can tell, the first "report" of it was on Neogaf, and since then, comments on other sites as it's been posted have just shut it down due to no evidence to go with it.

That said, who's running 3.56 anyway? Maybe once it's needed for the PSN (isn't right now) and/or jailbroken I'd consider upgrading, but 3.55 works for everything I need right now, so I'm in no rush to upgrade.

It's made it to slashdot.

http://hardware.slashdot.org/story/1...tains-Backdoor

However, it would be safe to say Sony will not confirm this either way.

Hrm, I would love to believe everyone on the internet but precedent leads me to not (believing) most stuff posted when it comes to rumors.

Anywho, onto the website PoyZ linked. Basically Sony's new firmwave will have some form of keylogger/remote access that PS3 owners are forced to have? That seems very risky in terms of a personal privacy issue and if Sony went that route, you'd bet your bottom dollar I'd be thinking of legal action.
Windows may have remote access desktop but you can't access it unless the user itself asks, Sony are forcing their way onto your PS3s without consent, its like rape basically, you'll get violated.

I hope you stay around :P Don't let me scare you off, I'm a cuddly teddy bear. Look at my avatar, does a piece of sushi seem scary? lol.

As I recall you agree to what you are installing when you upgrade your firmware and nobody ever reads the shit they have there.

I "kinda" read it. I don't put my PS3 on the net much, only did it for Madden/NCAA roster updates as that's all I play. Though if they go ahead with this, I don't have problems since I don't hack my PS3 open.

But I have a problem with the way Sony are going about this. Sure you own the product but what about user privacy, MS can do this and still have remote access. I'm probably missing the boat on this though, just seems ridiculous to me.
