Bugger the extra drives fire up a solaris 11 system, create a pool and let's see what the puppy does!

You can destroy/create a new one later in a few seconds.

Ps, you now MUST call the pool Lara....Hmmmm....

Noticed that the 7k2000 2TB disks are no longer on PCcasegear's list, so perhaps they will be getting some of the newer ones in soon - they currently don't have any 2TB Hitachi's listed at all.

They've been replaced by the new 7K3000 drives @ $130 each

A very nice price. I was sizing up 8 just this arvo. But first I need a SAS card. While it would be nice to get the 3TB ones, they're just too expensive over the 2TBs at the moment.

You do know 7K3000 are infact the range of drives, not the capacity and come in 1.5TB, 2TB and 3TB flavours?

They are $129 at places like PCCaseGear....

IMHO, Hitachi chose a very silly naming convention for the drive series.

Er, yes, I do know. I quoted twwen2 talking about $130 7K3000 drives, which are obviously the 2TB version. The 3TB are at $255, so like I said, too expensive over the 2TBs.

This place have the 3TB for $195...

http://www.lmc.com.au/products/Hard_...00RPM_SATA_HDD

I wish I'd got mine from there as I'm having to get a SECOND replacement from PCCG... as the first replacement they've sent me is also faulty, check my thread about it:

http://forums.overclockers.com.au/sh...d.php?t=945002

Not sure if these 3TB drives are just kinda dodgy or if I've struck a bad batch. If the second replacement from PCCG is also faulty, that makes 3 in a row, I think I'd start some pretty heavy swearing and cursing

The fact I paid a premium of $259 plus postage makes it even worse.

I already have two 3TB that I bought from them a few months ago that are working flawlessly, so not sure what to make of this current situation.

Thanks, I'll check em out. By the way, if your replacement's anti-static bag was sealed, it was like that from the factory. Might pay to start recording the serial numbers on any drives you get. A good thing with Hitachi is that they print them on the bag too.

Yeh you're right it was sealed, and I'll definitely be noting down the serial from now on.

Also I'm not sure if the store above which have them for $195 have any stock.. doesn't say.

Cool

With the 2TB models the going rate for the slower 5400RPMish drives appears to currently be around the $50 per Terabyte mark.

The minimum for 3TB drives is about $66 per Terabyte thus far.

Basically, you can get 2 x 2TB drives for the price of 1 x 3TB drive.

That is pretty simple maths, unless you are really hard up for SATA sockets.

It's this, but also power and heat. Thought I haven't looked into the latter two. But like you say, 3TB needs to drop a bit further.
