Default Reds vs Force

First go at shooting any type of sports and straight away found that my 70-200 wasn't long or fast enough. Need to try and get better seats next time.
I know they are bad quality because of the high ISO and heavy cropping, but any tips?
Also I used One Shot AF mode, but have read the AI Servo is better?

i really like the second one. the crop is wide enough that you can see the fans going nuts in the background

the last one is good too but would loved to have seen it taken with an ultra-wide!

only thing i can suggest to try other than a longer lens, is to set your AF to continuous. not sure if you came up against any focus issues or not, but that's usually the safer bet when shooting action/sports.

The 550D struggled to focus fast enough so none of the shots are really very sharp. I'll try continuous focus (which is AI servo) next home game, hopefully i'll get better seats.

The final one was taken with the kit lens and 18mm on a crop sensor was too long.

Thanks for the feedback!

i think the third one is better for the exact same reason except it's full of reds fans.

Thanks for sharing mmof. Perhaps not worry about noise - they look ok at this scale. They look pretty sharp too.

Perhaps a bit of cropping for the first 3? Maybe crop in a bit as follows:
Number 1: from top left
Number 2: from the right or bottom right (the best cheering seems straight above the players, so losing some of the cheering in the top right might not be too bad?
Number 3: a bit from the top right?

Three sports posts on page 1 of the gallery? Wow, sport is taking over!

Regards

Des

Sports are a great thing to take photos of, possibly the most fun i've had so far with my camera. It moves so quickly you've got to always be ready for that one shot.

Thanks Jerry, i've got shots from all around the ground and found a few mates who I didn't realise were there. Did you get any photos?
