Default Used to have a Canon 400D, now a G11, what's next?

I used to have a Canon 400D with Sigma 18-200mm lens which I got great shots out of. I wasn't a pixel peeper so I really do like these multipurpose lenses as I ceebs changing.

Since I was travelling a lot last year the 400D was too big so I sold it and bought a Canon G11 as it's a pseudo-DSLR and way smaller. Now I feel like it's lacking a lot and the image quality/versatility isn't there (or maybe I'm just too noob with it).

Now I wanna go back to an entry-level or mid-level DSLR and have always like Nikon IQ in the lower end cameras so was looking at a D90 with 18-200mm VR lens. I don't wanna spend too much so I'm looking at second hand.. Are there any other alternatives I should consider?

Do you really need a super zoom?

If that's the case... what's wrong with the G11??

If size/weight was an issue in the first place and you don't need to focal range of a super zoom... you'll have lots of other options starting with NEX-5, GF2, E-PL2, GH2, etc...

If the focal range of the super zoom is necessary then sure the 18-200 makes sense but maybe a smaller body than the D90 if the OP found the 400D to be much to travel with. Maybe the D3100 if the OP is already set on Nikon?

Just my 2cents...

Not sure why you'd want to go for another DSLR when you thought the 400D was too big. D90 would be bigger and heavier than a 400D.

It seems you want more versatility and better quality than your G11, but smaller than a DSLR. You could try something like a m4/3 or Sony NEX system. It's not D90 quality, but you do get a decent selection of lens and more compact body.

Sorry I forgot to mention I'm not so fussed about the size anymore. I've learnt to deal with it as long as there's a significant increase in the quality of photos I can take. It seems all my friends miss my photography (from my DSLR days) and aren't so keen on my G11 stuff.

I'm not travelling as much but I do like using the zoom to take stalker type shots.. =]

How does the NEX-5 compare to the D90? I've read separate reviews for each but I'd like to hear from someone who may have played with them both and has a good opinion on them..

I also have the option to buy a D80 with 18-135mm (no VR) which would be cheaper overall. Do you think that would suffice?

So I'm looking at getting the D90 and found it for $750 body only from a retail shop. Is that a good price? I don't really want to buy online from overseas..
