No, actually. It's because they moved from a VLIW5 to VLIW4 architecture, which increases the percentage of shaders used per cluster. Meaning better performance per shader count.
From the numbers I heard, I think a VLIW4 shader cluster (4 shaders) is about 98% as fast as a VLIW5 shader cluster (5 shaders)
i.e. VLIW4 has about 0.98*5/4=1.225x the performance per shader count as VLIW5

They also doubled the tessellation hardware from Cypress, which is basically why the die size is larger than Cypress (though I'm not exactly sure how much difference in hardware is required for schedulers/arbiters used to assign instructions to shader clusters between VLIW4 and VLIW5)

It's looking very likely that at least some HD7000 GPU's will be on GloFo 28nm

As far as performance and specs, I think so.
Especially if they end up using GloFo, which might have different performance to TSMC 28nm (hopefully better. Though that shouldn't be too hard for GloFo).

I believe they'll use the name AMD FX 8/6/4 (cores) [some kind of model number] for Bulldozer or something close to that.

Enjoy iy mate, do the flash and get the extra performance as well. Beside you will have a good 6 months with your 6950, this time though im going all out for the 7990.

If the power efficiency is good i may do the same ( go all out ) but opted for two HD 7970's

I dont see myself waiting an extra 3-4 months for the Dual GPU version though as it would probably be slower and cost the same.

2x 6950's = 1x 6990 But Cheaper
2x 6970's = faster then 1x 6990 at the same price

so its safe to assume the same for the next gen.

The SP went from 800 to 1600, the RAM bus width went up from 128 to 256. So it made plenty of sense. So what makes you think going up from 1532 to 2024 SP, and clocks from 880 to 1020 GPU 1375 to 1700 VRAM is going to give 100% performance increase. That's the part I don't get. SP's have gone up roughly 30% and clocks have gone up 15% CPU 25% VRAM. VRAM speed increase isn't going to do much for actual FPS. All up, at best, we'll see 50% speed increase overall. But 50% increase will see it beat the GTX580 by a fair margin.

As for the GTX680, from what we've seen with the GTX480 and GTX580. The current nVidia Architecture has reached it's limits. I reckon nVidia is going to have to release a whole new design, much like the 6XXX was compared to the 5XXX AMD/ATI cards. Nvidia is struggling to put 512SP's into play, adding more isn't going to work. Their memory bus although greater than AMD's, can't handle high VRAM speeds, so they prob need to find a fix for that as well.
It's been what near on two years since Fermi release and they still haven't wrung full performance potential out of them because they're horrific to code drivers for.

Fermi still has some life left TBH

To coincide with Bulldozer, et al, would be the obvious thing.

Must be nice having CPU and GPU departments, at times.

According to HWiNFO32 v3.73's changelog, the (likely 28nm) GPUs in question are named Tahiti, New Zealand, Thames and Lombok. Unfortunately that's about it on the Southern Islands front, hopefully more leaks are incoming.
Whoaa I wonder what core would "New Zealand" be
