This is great cause it means all you need for 4-way support is 4 slots and you're good to go...

Opens up mobo choices a fair bit for more extreme setups

I guess this also means that the NF200 is mostly dead... except for Tri-SLI on P67/Z68
Hmm. Suddenly my plans to keep my current motherboard and upgrade the cpu to Ivy Bridge when it arrives have been thrust into uncertainty.

So it seems like the general idea now is...

1 or 2 gpus - SB/IB.

3 gpus - X58 (or 4 if AMD)

3 or 4 gpus - SB-E/IB-E

That way you avoid NF200 and PLX chips in all situations - assuming you don't use dual GPU cards

Maybe from now on nvidia will use a PCI-E 3.0 bridge from PLX, rather than making their own PCI-E 3.0 NF200 for their PCI-E 3.0 dual GPU cards...

Otherwise of course they'd be bottlenecking things all over again if they stuck with the NF200

That's awesome, now Nvidia needs to let people be able to run 4way SLI on cards other than their highest end card. I understand they wouldn't want people doing it on a GTX 560 or lower, but why not on the GTX 570?

Since my motherboard supports PCIE 3.0, couldn't I get away with tri-SLI with Ivy Bridge (non-E)?

Aren't you running 3 cards on it now?

You could, but due to the NF200 chip it has to support tri-sli, it won't be at PCI-E 3.0 speeds.

Basically, your mobo has one 3.0 slot, the other 2 slots that come from the bridge chip are only 2.0.

It's a bit dishonest of gigabyte to claim it's 3.0 ready when it's only ready on one slot... no slots...

Edit:

Just double checked some reviews of your specific board. None of the slots will be 3.0 capable as they *all* go via the NF200 chip. Best you can manage is x16, x8, x8 at 2.0 speeds via the NF200 chip.

Depending on how the NF200 is implemented, some boards will have 1 PCI-E 3.0 slot, but are unlikely to have more than that. That 1 slot would come directly from the x8 CPU link, the other x8 goes to the NF200. In this case, gigabyte feed all links from the CPU via the NF200 I hope that makes sense!

Yes but as Sirius Dragon (thanks!) explained it won't be PCIE 3.0 (I will still need to use the NF200 chip which adds latency).

this is good news about the no need for nf200 on X79!

im happy to stay on my x58 setup only i cant find any 980X's anywhere brand new that isnt really expensive!

i would go and ask intel but i dont think i can...as the 980x is EOL right?

or it but im pretty sure intel has left over stock..

i asked my local pc shop to order it and they yes and then changed there minds and said sorry we cant get it for you..instead ive order the 990x in and you have to pay $1195! (no thank you!)

anyone got any ideas ion where i get a new one without ebay or paying 1k?

or i think ill just wait in the hope the 990x drop $400...

Why not a 980 non-X. Still 6 core, still 12MB cache and clocks like mad. Only diff is that it's not unlocked multi. Can be had for just under $600.

yeah... but i dont know how much Volts it can take and plus its not proven solid so that im interested in the 980x/970..

if once SB-E hit there be a massive clearout of X58 gear i might be able to get a 990x for $700-$800...which would be cool.

Voltage specs will be exactly the same as the 980x/990x they are after all the same CPU just binned differently.

What do you mean it's not proven solid?

As in there are not many results compared to say the 970/980x/990x.

i like to know that something works well before i buy it. (e.g: a good record)

They are the same CPU as a 980x/990x (again) results will be similar to those. Sounds to me like someone just wants to own an Extreme series CPU, that's all well and good but by the time you get your hands on one everyone will be on SB-E.

It's a bit late to jump on the Gulftown wagon if your buying new! Once SB-E is released you should be able to pick one up 2nd hand and atleast then you may be able to get a proven good OC'er
