Default IDE to AHCI : Didnt need a reinstall?

Guys/Gals,

I thought that if you had Windows 7 installed in 'IDE' for the OS harddrive, then when switching to AHCI in the bois you should get a BSOD ....

...but I didnt? Gigabyte P67A-UD4, WIN7 SP1, i72600K, WD Back 1TB, 16 Gig RAM.

So, why is it so...

Cheers,
Kon.

background: Got a PC pre-installed with Win7 from a vendor and noticed that in the BIOS the HD was IDE. I cursed in Klingon and then changed to AHCI, put the Win7 Disk in for re-install, but I was too late and it booted into windows!!!!

Windows 7 includes basic AHCI drivers for some chipsets (namely Intel). This is probably why it "just worked."

The other reason might be that it was installed with AHCI initially and them the BIOS was set back to IDE (for whatever reason). This would also make it a successful boot.

Maybe they had the AHCI driver enabled.

1) Set windows to use AHCI in regedit (google is your friend)
2) Reboot and set the BIOS to AHCI
3) ????
4) Profit!
