It looks like a very nice tablet OS but I sure hope their is a way to boot into normal windows for desktops and laptops. I can't imagine that MS would force everybody to use such a dramatically different interface.

That's what I was thinking hence my post above, but at 3:07 he switches into excel and if you look it looks just like win7 desktop. So the 'tablet' part of the OS seems very much like a gimmick if its running on a desktop. Good for tablets though for sure, too bad I hate tablets..

Looks like it will be good for people with tablet pcs...
I'm not overly keen on the UI to be honest. It's not really that intuitive, from what little has been shown thus far. It's a step in the right direction, but I hope MS is doing some serious work behind the scenes for an impressive win9/10 release, hopefully get rid of dll's and give us the long awaited WinFS. Yep, things haven't really improved all that much since Windows XP...

Windows 8 => Tuned-up Windows 7 + Another UI layer specifically for tablets?
...I'm more interested in what they're doing on the security mechanisms side than UI. There's a potential (unintentional) hole in Software Restriction Policy and AppLocker that needs to be addressed. While the hole can be exploited via concept/demo code, no one has used it in the real-world yet...Still, it would be nice if this was closed in Win8. It would also be nice if they can integrated a variant of the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) in a different UI. ...Not to mention revamp the UI and information layout for the "Advance settings" part of Windows Firewall.

Welcome to the future of interface design, kiddies!
You think that's a tablet interface? That's the desktop version, the mobile version is even simpler. "fukk dis, imma build me a hackintoss!" Don't bother. Mac OS X 10.7 is the last OSX, and its to be replaced by ... iOS Desktop. Which, oddly enough, won't look nor behave all that differently to the iPlod. And where Mapple & Microsloth tread, Nubuntu will follow. "wtf? why?" Because they're going after numbers. Computers are commodity consumer goods now, people want something that works how they think -- plug it in, press a button, it goes. We geeks are a diminishing subset, a victim of marketing and our own brilliance. |

![]() All thoses people that load weather widgets, and cpu speeds and processor usage can have similar apps as part of the UI instead of the wallpaper. Theres nothing ground breaking about it, just an additional option for easy use for touch enabled devices. If you dont have touch, dont use Metro. |

Knowing MS these days, I'm sure they want to reuse the work they've done on Metro for WP7
Having said that, there's no way they could sell an UI like that to the mass market. Even OSX, which is taking some UI elements from iOS, will allow that part to be disabled. Quote:
