I'm not sure Win8 is just "Metro bolted onto Win 7", But TBH, I've not done much research into it.
I believe Aero could have remained on the newer kernel.

It is important and on Win 7 its quite simple, I immediately noticed my dislike for the new approach when I found it buried in the new charm feature.

Really, so to shut down you dont first have to move your mouse into the top/bottom right corner of the screen to show the "charm" menu, followed by a mouse movement 3/4 down or 1/4 up the screen to "settings", followed by "power" and then in similar movements to Win 7 shutdown/restart configuration.

You need to know what your looking for, for that to happen.
If not, you could potentially be presented with too many apps to be displayed without using the zoom out feature, which you cant use a scroll wheel to do, instead another click.

Why don't you just hit the power button on the comp?

Not easy to access in my case.

why the hell should I?

Not saying that I don't because I often do, but it's these complications of simple tasks that I just simply resent.

I meant, if its that important to you, you could just put "Shutdown -R" in a batch file. Problem solvered.

Its not really "Buried" its just in a different place. If you showed a Win 7 computer to someone who had never used it before, Clicking on "Start" to Shutdown a computer is pretty unintuitive.

Yes, you need to know what your doing. But its the same with anything that is new... There will be a learning curve that some people just don't seem to want to approach.

Which is fair enough, these are the sorts of obstacles I will face when trying to sell it to workers whose "This is the way we've always done things" mantra is almost impenetrable.

See here:

There was a back lash when vista came out and changed the classic method of shutting down.

This has been a standard for years across Win X releases, and as an overclocker and gamer for those years it has become second nature.

Windows 8 is like using a Mac OS for the first time, your common "taken for granted" functions over the years have all of a sudden changed.

Unfortunately for me this change is not in line with my desktop utilization, and I admit I'm in the minority concerning my PC's functional purpose.

There are certain aspects I dont mind about metro e.g: ribbon standardization and sleek appearing windows. The start menu however is not made with focus for my desktop PC.

They follow the market which is driven by consumer trends. Soon the majority of PC systems will be tablets, a considerable part of the rest will be portables with touch functionality. How serious MS takes this trend you can see that for the first time they will launch a tablet PC system by themselves and not just the OS. Yes, the nerds will stay with desktop systems, but they are not the MS target group.

I am perfectly fine with Metro, I run a touchscreen system, W8 works like a charm. MS has to deliver though the promised apps for Metro. Only with apps designed for Metro, the tiles make sense. It's all about that. The maybe 300 they offer currently are a far cry from what I expect for later.

The much bemoaned change in the way the system is shut down, is for me too such an extent irrelevant that I have to question the mental state of certain posters here - who deliberate such mini peanut over dozens of pages here as if MS would charge us now each time we switch on a W8 system.

We are in an interesting shift, however the classic PC will remain for the foreseeable future large enough to house the forefront of powerhouse hardware, traditionally it has anyhow.

As I've said I am a minority within the market and disappointed that my desktop experience may suffer at the focus of mobile innovation.

BTW are you an overclocker or PC gamer? Perhaps there are many of us in this forum.

I agree with your first paragraph. Metro is great for Metro Apps, For me, it falls down on dual-screens (hotspotting a corner of a primary screen requires precision mouse movement). I think work needs to be done on this, (especially given the current trends of dual screens in office environments).

I also think that the "Desktop" and non-metro apps could be better integrated. But given that its just a Consumer Preview that we are looking at, I'd expect some of these things to change before the final release.

I disagree with your second paragraph though. While the discussion is focused on one single, (little used) function of windows, The resistance to change mentality is a real issue. The simple fact is, Things are done differently in Win 8/Metro. Some people will accept and embrace it, others will search for a way to modify it back to an experience they are comfortable with.

For me, as I've said, there is very little change. All my applications look Exactly the same, and my ability to use the computer as a tool has not changed.

Compare time spent in the OS, vs time spent actually in an Application, and I'd be surprised if Joe-Averages computing experience changes all that much.

I wonder if instead of the 'Fisher Price - My First Computer' primary coloured tiled look, Metro was full of pastel shaded apple patented Rounded rectangles, with some uber flashy fade-in/fade-out effects, the general rhetoric from the tech community would have been different.

Quick restart/shutdown is essential for me as an OC'er, but I'm a very small % of their market.

The excessive mouse movements contribute to my frustration regarding placing power options within the charm.

The UI has a touch focus, my desktop doesn't have a touch screen, nor do I want one for my desktop's intended purpose (Games + OC hardware).
For crying out loud, like YOU said, if you don't want to do the metro shutdown then use a batch script. That's only IF YOU want the faster restart times windows 8 brings.

If NOT then stop bloody going on about it on a small Australian forum because that won't change it! Why not write a post up on Microsoft's developer forums? They actually fixed the touch glitch I mentioned to them, so who knows maybe they will listen to you too.

Ease up, your opinion pro Win 8 Metro is just as valid as mine against Metro, whatever the forum.

Why don't we all feedback to M$?

I'm sure they would value both views.

They would prefer only Pro opinions because that means they hit the nail on the head and that means $$$

Its opinion sharing man, you don't know what the carry on effect of certain points will be.

You keep whinging about the same thing despite suggestions to solve them. If the biggest problem you have with windows 8 is that it's a little bit harder to turn it off, then I think it will do ok.
And I'm not PRO metro, I want a choice for a desktop. But if there isn't one then I'll live with it because the benefits outweigh the slight inconvenience.

The shutdown change is only one dislike, the start menu is another and the overall design focus for touch mobile is the major.

And I agree, I'll be running Win 8 for the other "benifits", because that's what M$ do, package new features within change e.g: DX version and corresponding Windows builds.

I'll suck it up and modify it if need be, I just don't like the direction. Perhaps if I jump on the surface train I will, but for PC gaming and overclocking I'd prefer a desktop design focus, and again this is a minority voice.

I know lets all form a circle just sing the new os's praises because apparently if you don't like it you should shut your fucking hole and not say anything according to you.
